We got through around 40 minutes before SY was closed. Got in line @ 10:30am, and got through in 20 minutes (we have global entry + Sentri), so approx 10:50am. From what I understand, the border was closed @ 11:30am, so it was a pretty close call. We had heard something was up, so we left a bit earlier than usual to get across before noon.

There was a huge BP presence massed at the border, along with fresh & shiny new concertina strung everywhere and patrol helicopters cruising above. The MX fed police were out in force as well on their side.

Closing the border is going to drive the Mexicans insane. So much business is dependent on free flow of US tourists going down, and MX nationals shopping in San Diego.

In fact, we were right next to one of the pedestrian crossings, and it was already backing up. And these were regular Mexican citizens just wanting to cross for the day, so you can imagine how pissed off they are.

As sketchy as the border is, both the US & MX have this weird symbiotic relationship were goods/people actually move back/forth pretty well.

You can image the anger now being directed at the MX gov't for not getting this sh!t under control. It's royally screwing TJ and baja, because now you have all this traffic backed up all over the city as people are freaking out where to stay & hang.

All in all a complete cluster, one which Trump has played masterfully. Just watch the denials of any asylum housing deal in MX be officially acknowledged shortly.

closing the border may provide incentive for Mexico to stop this.

FRiendly word of advice....don’t cross our southern border, in to Mexico.

We have friends who live in a border city and they haven’t crossed the border, in YEARS.

Just not worth the risks.

Glad you made it back into the US, in time.

Don’t go down to Mexico anymore, it is not safe. It hasn’t been safe for a long, long time.

Good info. We were there a week ago, just when the first bus of LGBT+ showed up. No love lost amongst the locals. They still remember the 9-11 border closing and it hurt the local economy greatly.

The reason why TJ is being targeted is multiple.

First, TJ is the furthest from both WashDC and from Mexico City for chains of command.

Secondly, weather forecasts. Texas just dropped 20 degrees cooler than TJ. Warm winter in Baja at present.

PS. When we came through, the caravans weren’t all coming from the east. Many were coming up the Baja, so they had to cross the Sea of Cortez somewhere. Are they coming from the Ensenada Cruise Ship ports? Are the Chinese assisting in their shipping?

We should have loudspeakers at the border, announcing in Spanish “our sincere apologies for the inconvenience to our law abiding Mexican friends, but the failure of the Mexican government to prevent this situation from developing has left America with no choice but to defend itself against lawless invaders. As soon as the Mexican government takes necessary and appropriate action to revolve this crisis which they have allowed on their territory, the sooner America can renew her welcome to our lawful and friendly neighbors.”

(we have global entry + Sentri)

What does Sentri get you that Global Entry doesn't?
