~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas

goodfellow2

Goodfellow Air Force Base is a nonflying United States Air Force base located in San Angelo, Texas, United States. As part of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Goodfellow's main mission is cryptologic and intelligence training for the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps.

Military firefighters are also trained here as part of the 312th Training Squadron. It is the home of the 17th Training Wing (17 TRW). The base is named for World War I aviator First Lieutenant John J. Goodfellow, Jr.

goodfellow5

Goodfellow's history traces to the days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, but its name registered the valor and sacrifice of an earlier conflict. On 14 September 1918, 1st Lieutenant John J. Goodfellow, Jr., of San Angelo, Texas, boarded his Salmson 2A2 observation plane at Gondreville Airfield in France to conduct visual reconnaissance behind enemy lines.

The mission was part of a larger undertaking just underway, a major American offensive intended to reduce the German salient near St. Mihiel. Unfortunately, adverse weather permitted observation only at a low altitude that exposed the lumbering Salmson to enemy pursuit. Three days later, the offensive a success, the young pilot's remains were recovered from his ruined craft and interred at the St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial near Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle.

The host unit at Goodfellow AFB is the Air Force's 17th Training Wing, part of Second Air Force (2 AF) of AETC.

There are also tenant units of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.
There is a Texas Air National Guard unit, the 217th Training Squadron (217 TRS).

The US Army 169th Firefighter Detachment is based at Goodfellow AFB with the battalion headquarters at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

The Army's 344th Military Intelligence Battalion is headquartered at Goodfellow AFB with separate companies at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and Corry Station, Florida.

goodfellow3

On 1 July 1993, the 17th Training Wing was activated on Goodfellow AFB. With the change in name came a marked diversification and increase in Goodfellow's mission. Rounds one and two of the BRAC process transferred special instruments training from the former Lowry AFB and fire protection training from the former Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois, to Goodfellow.

To support the increased training load, Goodfellow underwent extensive modernization and growth. With new training facilities, dormitories, dining halls, a commissary, a youth center, and a physical fitness center.

Hey, there, radu!

It was clear and cool now, but will start a warm-up tomorrow. Wed. or Thur it’s supposed to get up to 76....which, at this time of the year, is too warm, darn it!

Hope it warms up for you soon, too. I was watching the DH nest earlier today and it was quite windy and cold looking.

Mmmmmm! That 76 sounds mighty good right now! LOL! That’s a perfect temperature ANY time.

We had upper 30s but the wind chill was at least 15 degrees colder. NOT a nice day out there AT ALL. We won’t warm up until Thurs. but won’t be nearly as warm as you will. They did say we might have some thunderstorms Fri. night, though, so we’ll get warm enough for that.

That’s pretty darn cold all right! Not sure what it got up to here today, but I think it was about 60. We could use some rain though. Things are drying out and we’ll have more sandstorms when the wind blows. I can live without that!

Too darn cold for this time of year. 50s to around 60 is the norm but we weren’t anywhere close.

Maybe the system that’s supposed to bring us rain this weekend will swing through there first. You need that dust tamped down.

I’d love if it would rain. It would also help things to grow next spring.

So, how is Bella doing tonight?

Bella’s doing much better. Haven’t heard her wheezing for a while now. The shot works quickly and keeps things under control for about a month.

Actually Goodfellow ADB is not alone. I was stationed at 7505th Hospital Burderop Park AFB, UK for nearly three years. No landing strip at all. We serviced more than 8 US AFB’s in the immediate area. All air evacs were transported to Mildenhall AFB. Closed in 1965

I’m glad she’s feeling better! Maybe you and I need one of those shots. LOL! Since the sand storm, my allergies have just been awful! I’m sure the high winds and whatever blows around there in TN.

Yes, she’s feeling much better. Sleeping like a log right now, able to breathe easily again. She started wheezing Fri. night so hasn’t slept well for a couple of days.

I don’t know that the shot she gets would help us since her problem isn’t allergy related. You and I just need to have sinus transplants with sinuses that don’t react to pollen. LOL

Sounds like a plan to me! I’m rather tired of that drowning feeling in the middle of the night. LOL!

So glad she’s feeling better!

Yep, it would be nice to sleep through the night without waking up choking. LOL

I reckon we’re stuck with it since I don’t think anyone does those transplants.

If you ever do, let me know! I want one!

I could take benadryl, but man! it puts me right to sleep. Day or night.

To: The Mayor

Good evening/morning, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.

Hope you had a good Monday and clear sailing for the week ahead.

My Monday was mostly chaos, but I survived.

No antihistamines here. They dry things out too much plus put me in a coma.
Just nose spray so I can breathe and Kleenex - - lotsa those. Buy stock. I’ll make ya rich! LOL

Good morning, JJ...((HUGS))...hope your jets are getting plenty of exercise.

Are you having good weather?

It got up to 40 today, and rained. We are awash in wet, sloppy streets and parking lots. Dropping to just above freezing. Terrible footing!!

Good morning, ML...((HUGS))...sounds sorta familiar. I bet Penny’s not much for venturing out, but is liking her mud room.

Snow this weekend, now 40 today and rain. And fog. Supposed to rain most of the night. I sure hope not. Sloppy wet all over and parking lots are really slick. Maybe snow by Wednesday and into the teens overnight.

Stay warm and dry.
