the kid should have taken the hat off, if that’s the rule, and if he refused, he should have been sent to the principle’s office, as he was providing a distraction to the learning atmosphere by baiting the teacher and the other students (which he was perfectly aware he was doing); the content expressed by the hat, political or otherwise, is irrelevant...I’m sure the tone of the commentary on this thread would be completely different if the kid had an Obama hat on, and refused to take it off, on the grounds that people are too timid and stupid to deal with it...

My guess would be that there is not a ‘No hat’ rule and that is why the teacher was reluctant to apply it. I am however pretty certain there is a ‘Don’t call people assholes’ rule that applies to everyone on the campus and which the teacher seems to have fallen afoul of.
