When most of South America became sovereign nations around 1820, there were two main figures:

Simon Bolivar, the Liberator of the North, and

Bernardo O’Higgins, the Liberator of the South.

During the Mexican War 1846-48, Santa Ana raised a regiment made up of Irishmen escaping the potato famine. They were called the San Patricios.

Then there are those with Spanish surnames found in Ireland today, descendants of survivors of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Anyway, “Beto” O’Rourke doesn’t fall into any of these. He’s as Hispanic as Jerry Rivers Rivera & for the same reason.

Mainly deserters from the US Army ...

Actually these “Irishmen” were deserters from the U.S. Army. They were eventually hung.
