Yeah, let's ban autonomous weapons systems. That ought to keep bad actors from using them against humanity. Just like nuclear non-proliferation, chemical and biological weapons, mines, IEDs... Yeah, would be tyrants always follow the rule of international law...

Or we could go ahead and develop them, keeping our people out of harms way when we have to go into a hostile environment. Hmm, saves lives... By developing them we also would understand how best to defeat or defend against them, protecting our people. Hmm, again saving lives...

Russia already has a doomsday device that will launch a MAD (mutually assured destruction) attack if sensors tell it that Russia has been hit.

It’s because a Russian refused a MAD launch order in 1983.

Technology that promises huge profits just can’t be stopped. Even research into human DNA tinkering, nano weapons, bio-chem weapons, AI, DEW weapons, HAARP, drone insects, etc....simply can’t be stopped. The reason: our enemies are doing it. Keep up, or die. The merry-go-round is spinning like a lathe and they can’t get off. The prospects are truly chilling.

Talk about a bad plan.
Doctor Strangelove was supposed to be a comedy, not a manual.

Hey Vatican, stop with the subterfuge and concentrate on the spiritual war that is taking place here and now!

Back in the mid 80’s, I was told to think futuristically by a well placed government official and to imagine what the government will have in 20 years. That is what it has now but, you just don’t know it because it’s Secret. Nowadays, militaries around the world are trying to develop the best robotic combat machines, not jus the U.S.

Fully automated and autonomous lethal weapons systems must be banned now before they become a reality in tomorrow’s wars, a Vatican representative said.

Is a cruise missile a robot?

Is a drone a robot?

The Key Words are; Fully automated and autonomous.

A cruise missile is a robot but it is not autonomous. It follows a programed path to its target. It does not make decisions. So, it is not autonomous.

A drone is not a robot. It is a remotely piloted vehicle. It is not autonomous, it has a pilot back at its control center.

the drone is guided (not the same as piloted), but is the targeting automated?

It seems some churches (not just Catholic) are on the wrong side of the spiritual warfare.

Ask a conservative to list the world’s top 20 problems. Then ask a liberal to do the same. I’ll bet my last dollar that neither list will have “killer robots” on it.

So naturally that’s what the Vatican is worried about. Killer robots. Sometimes I think the Catholic Church should just fire every official, and then start all over again from scratch.

Banned? They are already here. I have no doubt they have been field tested in the shithole countries we just can’t seem to get out of.
If anyone thinks other countries are not working on “killers” and General AI; you’re fooling only yourself.

I am not that read up on the drones targeting but I would think not. It would defeat the purpose of the remote operator. If you already know the target location you may as well send a cruise missile.

The purpose of the drone is flexibility of mission. You don’t have that with a fully programed vehicle. The human operator is there to recognize opportunity or danger and take actions required by the mission parameters.

Tonight's feature on Monster Chiller Horror Theater is The Swiss Guard Conquer the Killer Robots starring Gina Lollobrigida, Nick Adams, Vito Scotti and Putz the Wonder Dog.

Actually seems like a fairly sensible device as far as you can be sensible with MAD.
First, it has to be turned on - it isn’t always running.
Then there has to be an event that looks like a nuclear attack - seismic, air pressure and radiological events.
Then it has to lose communication with the upper levels of the chain of command.
Only then does it start executing the ‘dead hand’ protocols.
I’d be more worried about subversion than anything.
