PIKE COUNTY, Ohio — Mention Fredericka Wagner, 76, around Pike County and most folks have a thing or two to say.
To many, she’s the wealthy landowner who worked with her husband acquiring hundreds of acres to build a renowned horse-breeding empire atop a hill largely out of sight here.
To those who tried to buy land from her, she’s a money-hungry opportunist who takes advantage of low-income families.
To her lawyer, she’s a God-fearing, tax-paying Pike County business owner who is being wrongly accused in helping her family plot a cover-up of one of the state’s most heinous crimes.
Some things are undisputed: She is the fiercely protective matriarch of the family who stands accused in the calculated, cold-blooded killings of eight members of the Rhoden family in April 2016.
By both wealth and stature, she is an outlier in her own county.
Her arrest and those of her son, George “Billy” Wagner, 47; her daughter-in-law, Angela Wagner, 48; and her two grandsons, George Wagner IV, 27, and Edward “Jake” Wagner, 26, have shone a national spotlight on rural America where for some, land ownership symbolizes success.
From the Wagner farm, accessed through metal gates, Fredericka Wagner and her husband conducted their business operations, offering exotic animals and dozens of acres of land for sale.
Now, Fredericka Wagner is largely confined to that farm, under house arrest as part of her bond conditions. She is even reluctant to attend church, fearing intimidation from fellow congregants, according to her attorney.
“I’m not supposed to be talking about the case,” Fredericka Wagner said in a brief phone conversation with The Enquirer. “All I can say is I’m innocent. That’s all.”

Have to admit, I thought that this bizarre case and the way it was seemingly being willfully mishandled suggested corrupt local LEOs and cartel involvement. This one will be worth following. I dont want to have to wait for the movie, they always screw up the storyline anyway.
I know this women. I bought a dog from her. She sells what she calls American Mastiffs. The biggest dogs you ever saw. The dog I bought was a female 155 pound mastiff. She was a fabulous dog. The father of my dog was over 210 pounds. It was like petting an African Lion. The dogs were very protective. Nicest dogs in the world to their owners. But they knew their job was to protect the family. She also had large black Fiersians, almost as big as a Clydesdale but black with a long curved necks.
This lady did not care that much about money. I came up ten dollars short and she was ok with it. She had lots of money. Her front gate looked like it came out of Beverly Hills. It was odd to see because the houses along the road that let up to her gate, probably did not cost as much as her front gate. Her drive back to her house and barn was very long and up hill. She had lots of land. It seemed to me to be mostly pastures with woods surrounding it.
This women seemed to be very German and very strong willed. But also, very business like. Her place was organized, and in good shape. She was no hill-billy. But those who lived in houses on the road leading to her property may have been. I don’t think she killed anybody. But it is possible that someone around the area did.
she and her family sound like real-life versions of “Mags Bennett” and her low-life family from “Justifed” ...

No, she didn’t actually kill anybody. But she helped cover it up. At least that’s the allegation.
I am SO ready to watch that series all the way through, again! We marathon watched it a few winters ago...the soundtrack CD is STILL in my car player. ;)
We even have cats named, ‘Boyd’ and ‘Eva,’ LOL!
I just happened to see this case appear on a news site and it’s really puzzling. She may have been perfectly fine and her family was nuts...I really don’t know. It’s a strange situation in a somewhat unlikely area.
And we should all say a prayer for the poor people who were killed.
I suppose this is one of the daughters in law in court or daughter. Confusing mess. There was a thread on this whole story a week or so ago unless I read about it elsewhere. I’ll look for it. Hard to believe!!!

I was surprised how it grew on me. ‘Violence’ is rarely my first choice, LOL!
But, the writing was SO GOOD and the ‘stars’ (major and minor), that wanted to be a part of it really made it so awesome. So many surprises! And Adam Arkin as Director for a lot of it, was aces. Elmore Leonard writing? OMG! For me, it never lost ANY luster all the way through.
And I will miss Dewey Crow until the day I die. :(

OMG, she charged people 10-13% interest on no or low down payments on what would be their own homes. What an evil woman.
My first house I purchased in 1982 at 13.6% interest that was government sanctioned.
The people pay their loan payment, they get to call the place their own. It is better than rent. The downside is, these low and no real income people are living on a hope and a prayer, not taking full advantage of something that could be a huge blessing.
Yep. Or the "Fargo" series with Jean Smart as the matriarch.
This is the earlier FR thread...googling turns up old articles of arrests for marijuana growing etc. in that family - not small amounts - leading officials at that time to suspect cartel involvement.
