You've got it exactly backward. The Loyalists were the ones who warned that instituting a government dependent on men always ends in tyranny. A sovereign may seem to make little rationale sense, but it's based on tradition and allegiance to the state.
A system of government based on a piece of paper, with an assumption that rules will be followed, laws fairly applied and dangerous cabals prevented from forming is ridiculous. The founders' even repeatedly warned about the shortcomings and the need for constant vigilance.
Well, as we have seen, the ability to corrupt the body politic was mere child's play. We are now living the results of actions put in to place over 200 years ago. People point at Clinton or Hussein, but the manipulation of voting, the control of media, and of course, control of the military/police forces occurred a long, long time ago.
What we have here is a demonstration of the collective power of denial, the tendency to ignore or dismiss evidence that highlights the real problem(s). However, that's sort of ok, because while people may be confused and/or disagree with the root cause(s), I think pretty much everyone is on board with what needs to be done to rectify the situation.
And if/when Trump decides to act, what form of government will take its place? Why do all democracies - direct or republic - fail? Why are the most stable forms of government, the ones that protect the civil rights and economic interests of the productive class - over a time frame of 5-10 thousand years in the historical record I might add - taken on the same exact shape?
