Trump to Hold Off on Tariff Hikes Against China, Negotiations Continue

The White House announced Saturday that President Trump has agreed not to further raise tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports from ten percent to 25 percent as he had previously threatened, after a dinner meeting at the G-20 summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In exchange, China will agree to purchase a “not yet agreed upon, but very substantial” amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other product from the U.S., to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in the statement.

China has agreed to start purchasing agricultural product from our farmers immediately, it said.

In addition, Trump and Xi have agreed to immediately begin negotiations on structural changes with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft, services, and agriculture, Sanders said.

“Both parties agree that they will endeavor to have this transaction completed within the next 90 days. If at the end of this period of time, the parties are unable to reach an agreement, the 10% tariffs will be raised to 25%,” she said.

Xi has also agreed to designate Fentanyl as a “Controlled Substance,” meaning that those selling Fentanyl to the U.S. will be subject to China’s maximum penalty under the law, the statement said, calling it a “wonderful humanitarian gesture.”

Both agreed that “great progress” has been made on North Korea, and that both Trump and Xi would strive, along with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un, to “see a nuclear free Korean Peninsula.”

Not to worry.

Hussein will claim credit for all improvements in trade that come out of this.

AoTD 101 : Make threats and hold back in return for concessions. Call it “renegotiation”.

Not to say our President is getting played, but … maybe he is.

https://census.gov/foreign-trade/balance/c5700.html

Look at this year’s trade figures. They show that China has (dramatically) reduced the purchases of US goods, in the last several months.

It sounds to me, like they are just agreeing to buy what they ordinarily buy anyway.

Mr. President please don’t get played.

For the entire last generation and a half, EVERYONE has been getting played by China.

You seemed to be different.

For real. Don’t fall for the same old crap.

Trying to close a $350bil trade imbalance with $50bil or $100bil in purchases is not adequate.

In any conceivable universe.

I’m guessing this is a package deal in the making and will include some substantial geopolitical/IP concessions as well.

If not, stop talking and move forward with the increased tariffs.

Smart move. He’s opening up their markets to our goods and services as should have been done under agreements. He’s not only enforcing those, he’s doubling down for a better deal.

I don’t like tariffs per say but we are getting the crap end of the stick too many times. We ARE the biggest consumer market in the world. Play nice or NO entry.

But most a-hole statist in the world would just hate to buy more from us and admit we kick their asses economically.

F China for sure though.

This sounds a lot like the deal Trump cut with the EU’s Juncker this summer which has so far resulted in absolutely zero concessions by the Europeans.

I’ll trust him for now but the entire globalist, GOPE, media, Wall Street etc... wanted these tariffs stopped. That tells me it was wrong for the 90 day truce. China either has to be confronted and we remain the superpower of the world or we retreat and communism becomes the controlling world power.
