Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler plans to bring a new policing pilot program before City Council for final approval on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
The Public Safety Support Specialists, or PS3s, will be non-sworn officers who do not carry guns.
"They will be engaged in the community in non-emergency calls, so that's things like property crimes, break-ins," Wheeler tells WW.
The PS3s grew out of a proposal in the 2016 police union contract approved under then-Mayor Charlie Hales to create Community Service Officers who would respond to minor property crimes and nuisance calls, among other things.
To fund the program, Wheeler cut the Mounted Patrol—cops on horseback—from the 2017-2018 city budget.

Disarm the entire lot.
And ensure neither the mayor nor anyone else in city goverment from dog catcher to judges are allowed to hire private bodyguards.
You’ve got it. These will essentially not be “police officers” in the traditional sense unless they are given “detain and arrest powers”.
Otherwise, they are sitting ducks for a domestic dispute gone very bad.

Now it is also become “Antifa Central” where these mixes Marxist/anarchist psycho thugs are literally given run of the streets and sidewalks, blocking both as well as federal buildings.
Time for the feds to step in where they have jurisdiction and reduce the Mayor/City Council to political sideshows. Also cut off all federal funding for this city (and I’ll throw in Seattle as well - now a Mini-Me copy of Portland instead of once being the “Maxi-Me” leader of a Marxist/liberal lunatic Left city going crazy on itself.
I hope that no one applies for this job position, if only out of self-preservation.
My son was a federal police officer and in two instances, he and his fellow officers had to take down armed crazy people, right in the heart of DC where there are more cops than politicians.
It is a rough world out there on a good day, and with the rise of brain-damaging/destroying drugs and the rise of far-left lunatic armed gangs (Antifa, some of BLM/BAM, etc.), if you’re a law enforcement officer and NOT ARMED, you are not only a prime target for assault, gun grabbing, but also for assassination.
Either stop the insanity now, or start finding more burial plots for law enforcement personnel and unarmed civilian victims of violent crimes.

What I see is a bunch of pseudo-cops with poor training.They are going to get their asses kicked out on the street.

Crowd/riot control duties are often given to the mounted police, as horses are very effective. From this, it is the mounted police who are being gutted to pay for this new group. So the net effect is much less protection from mobs and rioters.
In the Summer of 1993, I met a London Bobby who was also a Baptist preacher. This was at a retreat in the North Carolina Mountains.
To my surprise, he carried a gun on duty. It was actually the same one James Bond carried, a Walther PPK. He was not allowed to carry it openly tho. He carried it concealed.
I'm sure that there would be a rush for that duty...

This sounds something like New York’s auxiliary police program. But it’s worse...because I don’t think the NY guys respond to break-in calls.

I don’t see this ending well.
If I was a cop there I would tell this mayor to shove it and find a job in another city. The entire police force should do that and see what the city turns in to. Each day. liberals prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that liberalism is a mental illness.
I believe most people in Portland probably don’t care about this stuff. The voters are inner city dwellers who busy themselves earning a living. This doesn’t affect them so they don’t care. When these things start affecting them they will change.
