‘He Did Not Lead on AIDS’: With Bush, Activists See a Mixed Legacy (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | December 3, 2018 | Liam Stack

Mr. Bush, who died Friday at 94, took two significant steps to address the epidemic, which had killed roughly 59,000 Americans by the end of 1989: He signed the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which forbade discrimination against people living with the disease, and the Ryan White Care Act, which remains the largest federally funded program for H.I.V./AIDS patients.

...

In 1991, Mr. Bush counseled “behavioral change” as a way to fight H.I.V. and described AIDS as “a disease where you can control its spread by your own personal behavior.” Many gay activists took it as a slight that blamed them for the public health crisis.

In one interview in 1992, he said he opposed the idea of same-sex couples raising children. In another, he said if his grandchild came out as gay he would “love that child” but also tell him that he was not “normal.”

“I would put my arm around him and I would hope he wouldn’t go out and try to convince people that this was the normal lifestyle, that this was appropriate lifestyle, that this was the way it ought it be,” Mr. Bush said. “I would say, ‘I hope you wouldn’t become an advocate for a lifestyle that in my view is not normal.’”

The activists felt "slighted", but male homosexuals committing sodomy with lots of partners caused the public health crisis. It was true then and and now that the most effective to reduce the incidence of AIDS is "behavioral change". President Bush was also right that homosexuals should not promote their abnormal lifestyle.

It's sad that speaking these truths now can be career-ending.

RIP, President Bush.

Most of those who contracted AIDS in this country to that point had done so as a result of poor lifestyle choices. A President could not be expected to “lead” on an issue when those at risk never were acting responsibly.

Wanna avoid Syphilis, Don’t have sex with anyone but your spouse.
Wanna avoid AIDS don’t, have sex with other guys or don’t have sex with anyone but your spouse.

Positive behavorial changes are the BEST guarantee.

How could Reagan or Bush take the lead on AIDS? Homosexuals in bath-houses did. Tens if not hundreds of thousands died.

Some things are problematic. When you become aware of it, change our lifestyle. At the very least, be monogamous.

Too much to ask...

Better to moan and groan about Bush or Reagan.

Look at all the people dying of various kinds of Cancer. I guess they should stand up and blame every president for it.

The logic of the insane, isn’t logical.

Yes, The Gay Plague (AIDS) is “a disease where you can control its spread by your own personal behavior.”

AIDS is completely avoidable.

Except for the poor folks in the beginning who got it from tainted blood transfusions, like Arthur Ashe.

I remember watching a interview President Bush did on the back of a train with MTVs Tabitha Soren.(sp) She was spouting off about what Bush was doing for AIDs patients and Bush said something to the effect: "The things that cause AIDs people ought not do them." But this Tabitha woman was in his face and then she went off about how Republicans are making it harder for minorities to vote.

I don’t see much comment from the Freepers about HIV. HIV is the cause of AIDS not lifestyle.

Or so we are told. Total nonsense of course.

Read a little Duesberg in your spare time to learn about what a total and ongoing fraud the HIV=AIDS scam actually is.

The gay “activists” were p*ssed because they wanted to continue their horrifyingly promiscuous and dangerous lifestyles without consequence. (”Why can’t I have 112 @n@l s*x partners per year?!?!! It’s my right!!! And if I get sick, someone else needs to pay for my medical bills!!!” )

It came up in a conversation at work, where one of my co-workers simply could not believe that one could go through life without contracting STDs regularly, much less ever.

Typical homonazi activists. “If only George Bush had given us more money, we wouldn’t have screwed ourselves to death”.
