After the Gulf War (“Operation Desert Storm”) president H.W. Bush’s popularity actually hit 90%!

Yet two years later he couldn’t even win a second term with a plurality of the vote.

What were the reasons for his collapse and failure to win the 1992 election?

IMHO there were two issues largely responsible for the decline of H.W. Bush, the rise in popularity of Ross Perot and the eventual election of Bill Clinton:

1 - Bush’s broken promise of “No New taxes”

2 - His involvement with and support of NAFTA

Without those two issues Perot would not have garnered the level of support he did and Bush would have no doubt been re-elected.

In his campaign Perot warned us about the damage NAFTA would do to America.
But Clinton was elected, signed NAFTA into law, and it took almost 25 years before we had a president who would honestly admit the failures of NAFTA and take corrective action.
