Ivory for sure, although there may be grandfathered in pieces.

Selling a stolen handgun to a thug on the street wasn’t already illegal?

That’s what I’m getting at. Generally if you can’t sell something you can’t buy it, or own it, either. Certain firearms and animal items may be grandfathered but it can’t be many. It seems so weird to say you can buy somerhing, you can own something, but you can’t sell it.

Then now is the time to stock up on your guns and ammo.

The real purpose of background checks is registration.

If the government’s database only records the original purchaser, then over time, as the original purchasers sell/give the guns to their friends and relatives, and eventually die, the ability of government to discover who possesses the older guns gets less over time.

If each transfer requires a check, and each check leaves a permanent record, then they have a better ability to round up and confiscate.

I’m talking about something you can buy and posses, but not sell. Your example doesn’t fit. Plenty of things are banned outright.

Perhaps booze, and on some scale food, not that I think about it.

With Christmas coming up, this may be a good time for FReepers to consider gifting firearms to their offspring and nieces and nephews. Check local laws on private transfers, then write, date, and sign something which transfers ownership to the young one.

You don’t necessarily need to physically transfer possession yet, just effective ownership. It is an especially good idea to legally transfer ownership of at least part of your collection of boat anchors if you’re getting too old to really enjoy them all anyway.

It’s good if none of your firearms have to be recorded in probate when you pass on.

Wasn’t there something about putting them in a trust.

Stock up on 80% lowers. Those don’t require any FFL middleman doing a background check.

Gun trusts are mainly for National Firearms Act (full auto) firearms.

https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/using-gun-trust-pass-firearms.html

It has the disadvantage that the serial number of the gun is recorded in public trust documents. You want your guns to be passed on to young people who will legally have ownership of them, but with that ownership not being recorded in any government database.
