France dumps gas tax hike after massive protests

French President Emmanuel Macron has scrapped a fuel tax rise amid fears of new violence, after weeks of nationwide protests and the worst rioting in Paris in decades.

An official with the Elysee palace told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the president decided to get rid of the tax.

Edouard Philippe told lawmakers that “the tax is now abandoned” in the 2019 budget, and the government is “ready for dialogue.” The budget can be adjusted or renegotiated through the course of the year.

Three weeks of protests have left four people dead and were a massive challenge to Macron.

One of the activists leading the movement says that he fears more deaths if Saturday’s demonstration goes ahead, and called for President Emmanuel Macron to speak out and bring calm.

Christophe Chalencon said that “if not there will be chaos,” with risks of more deaths.

Chalencon said in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press that the grassroots movement, triggered by fuel tax hikes, has grown amid Macron’s silence.

Too late, I think. Even the police unions are considering joing in to this Saturday'sDemo.

You can't "Fix The Climate!" (Pay off your cronies" on the backs of the poor...

I saw one article that blamed all of the riots on DONALD TRUMP. If he had not pulled out of the Paris Accords, the AMERICAN TAXPAYER would be paying for all of it, not the French taxpayer.

Did he dump the tax hike, or just delay it 6 months?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-06/france-dangles-wealth-tax-review-as-yellow-vest-anger-persists/10587730

France’s Government has abandoned a fuel-tax hike that it previously said it had only suspended for six months, in the face of protests across the country over living costs.

Farmers and trade unions pledged to join the nationwide demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron, with the Government’s concessions failing to stem the momentum of the most violent demonstrations France has seen in decades.

The Government has suggested it may amend a wealth tax that critics say goes too easy on the rich. Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said all tax-related policies needed to be periodically evaluated and, if deemed not to be working, should be changed.

He said the wealth tax could be reassessed in 2019.

When the Police are joining the protesters, you know your days are numbered.

Macron’s arrogance proved to be his nemesis and dealt the death blow to his climate change program.

He has no political capital left and he no longer speaks for the French people. Its over.

Don’t even put down the torches and pitchforks - just start in on the migrants.

That’s what I was wondering. Is this that 6-month delay? Or is this something new?

4 people dead for this. How did they die? Can we prosecute the climax hoaxers with murder now that their felonious lying has lead to other crimes?

Would any US govt drop a policy because of demonstrations in the Capital? France has too many residuals leftover from the Revolution.

The budget can be adjusted or renegotiated through the course of the year.

They'll put it back when they're ready, when they've got their legislative ducks in a row.

There goes the Earth! Again.

In addition to global warming being a hoax imagine the morons thinking that France is going to save the world by using less gasoline just because it’s a little more Expensive.

So France riots over a gas tax while Californians happily voted for higher gas taxes a month ago?

“If he had not pulled out of the Paris Accords, the AMERICAN TAXPAYER would be paying for all of it, not the French taxpayer.”

That sounds like fake news. The reason for the high taxes is very simple - to get people to use less fuel, so as to reach their carbon ‘goals’. And they’ll soon find that $8.00 fuel won’t do it, maybe a 10% reduction in use, when something like 40% is needed. So, they probably will have to go to something closer to $15.00.

This is the price that a country pays when the voters are math illiterate and don’t bother to understand that saving the planet will ON THEIR BACKS.
