I have such a difficult time picturing the mechanics of this terrible event.

They were refueling at 2 AM.

Encountering a C130's wingtip and prop vortices up close and personal might be wicked ride for an F/A-18 at low speed.

Add turbulence or whatever and s-it happens fast.
