But the loss of real customers is permanent.

It quickly dissipated as their enthusiasm is trivial and short lasting. You don't have to keep coming back to buy ammo, cleaning and target supplies, and other goodies for a t-shirt or pair of shoes.
The real outdoor sporting goods have many expendables and if a store has great, friendly service and decent prices the store will thrive. All the wunderkind MBA types from the "prestigious" colleges have never partaken of true outdoor sports and have no understanding of the concept of the volume of return business for those sports.
