Senior officials for the Venezuelan government have reportedly travelled to London for crunch talks with the Bank of England as they seek to repatriate more than $500 million of gold back to Caracas.

Venezuela has in recent years been a major seller of gold, and this year alone it has sold about 26 tons, worth close to $900 million, to Turkey. In the past four years, Venezuela's gold reserves have decreased to about 175 tons from about 400 tons, Reuters reported, citing statistics from the country's central bank.
Venezuela has been selling its sizeable gold reserves, built up under Hugo Chavez, to try to address the economic crisis plaguing the country. Hyperinflation of goods means everyday items are unaffordable for many Venezuelans, and poverty and violence are widespread.

Why does this matter ?
Maduro and his social elites will continue to line their pockets with 50% of the gold, at this point Venezuela’s remaining economic seed corn. Once the seed corn is all gone then the end game comes, which is the elites will begin to evacuate the country and access their Swiss bank accounts. Maduro will be on hand a bit longer, but with his immediate family he will ultimately board the palace helicopter to some foreign country and live off of the billions he looted from the peasants he proclaimed to love so dearly.

They loaned it to speculators or banks, who have hedged, pledged and sold it many times over. Its called rehypothecation.

They didn't sell it. Many countries pay other countries to hold their gold.
They now want it back and England wants to know why. They probably don't have it.
