This Season’s Guilty Pleasure: Binge-Watching Hallmark Christmas Movies
Wall Street Journal ^ | Nov 29 2018 | Katherine Bindley

Posted on 12/08/2018 7:01:58 PM PST by rintintin

Every weekend around this time of year, the living-room TV in Tim Gates’s Pittsburgh home is tuned to the Hallmark Channel. His wife and teenage daughter watch the network’s original Christmas movies all day long.

Mr. Gates usually sits down and teases them about the movies, which feature predictable plotlines and tropes. “Next thing I know, I’m sucked in for a half-hour, 45 minutes,” he says.

I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for the original Hallmark “The Good Witch” movies, with Katherine Bell. I’ll watch them any and every time they’re on.

Except I don’t feel guilty. It’s like a Hallmark card come to virtual life.

Yes, it’s predictable, etc. but somehow it’s soothing.

Apparently some are ashamed of watching fairly clean movies.

How sick is this....we’re traveling and no Hallmark Channel :-(

We put on Lifetime channel and....it’s a movie with many of the Hallmark channel actors (elf girl, repeat mom, etc).

The picture went out and only sound. So, we listened, to the remainder of the show.

Help!

:-)

We laugh at the depiction of “cold” weather. No gloves & open parkas all. Yeah, right. & “snoap”. Tally-Ho!

t is kind of like a drinking game. I even have nick names for many of the characters. Our Heroine is “Holly.” She is cutely attractive but NEVER hot. The hot one is the current gf of the guy Holly will be falling in love with.

Holly’s self-absorbed but rich and handsome bf is Richard (’cause he’s a dick). Holly’s best friend is “Joy.”

I used to have a name for the guy (always sporting a 5 o’clock shadow) but I forgot it. Always helpful and wryly insightful. Maybe someone can suggest one?

Add in a wise old ma or dad — rarely both and almost always a widow(er) who was married to the best person ever and a snow covered Santa’s Village setting named “Green EverPine Hollows,” mix in a misunderstanding out of “I Love Lucy” followed by finding the “true meaning of Christmas” and — boom — Hallmark Christmas movie

I saw that episode!

For me, rehash of chick flicks are re-runs.

As such, nor will I not be forced into watching the Lifetime Channel either.

You need an Amazon Fire Stick and a subscription to the online Hallmark Channel. 😀

I love The Wizard of Oz and Bad Santa. I never get sick of watching either one and I always laugh at Bad Santa and I always sing along with the Tin Man.

My binge guilty pleasure of late has been watching “Justified” on Amazon and enjoying every minute of it.

It’s going to be a Boyd Crowder kind of Christmas.

Last night I finished binge watching on Hulu “Killing Eve”, great show.

My favorite Christmas movie is the 1936 film “The Thin Man”, with William Powell and Myrna Loy.

You keep the Hallmark movies.

I tell my wife, “I could have written this movie” and she tells me “ well why don’t you.”

Yep, that nails it - but my wife watches them all the time. At least they are generally clean and wholesome.

If this is what you like, either sincerely or ironically, knock yourself out. You don’t owe it to the universe to be a snooty consumer of entertainment you don’t really like.

Main plot:

Rekindled romance (or new love)

Sub plots:

° A misunderstanding based on hearing part of a conversation (as first used in Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”) or a hug perceived as meaning something more.

° Guy or gal from deep blue Amerikkka (usually NYC) ends up in small town red America, hates it at first but ultimately discovers that this is REAL America.

Good stuff.
