San Francisco (CNN Business)California regulators want to tax text messages to increase funds for programs that bring connectivity to underserved residents.

A new surcharge proposed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) wouldn't be a per-text tax, but a monthly fee based on a cellular bill that includes any fees for text-message services. Most carriers offer a flat fee option for texting, and already charge a similar fee for other services included in the bill — such as phone calls. The exact structure of the charge would vary from carrier to carrier........

It will be some fixed taxed, buried in with all the others, and the youth voter base, half who probably have their phones paid for by mom and dad, will never even notice.

This. It probably won't be a large amount, say a dollar or two per month (if even that high), so very few will complain.

Over the past ten years, approximately five million people have moved away from the state of California. The ones who remain love to be taxed

The state is already past the tipping point where the demands of the moochers are higher than what the taxpayers can contribute.

The state goes into debt borrowing money to give away.

It's estimated that the state and local governments already have over $2 trillion dollars of debt.

That is almost as much as the total annual state GSP (State GDP).

And the high taxes the government collects don't go to debt reduction or infrastucture renewal - they go to social welfare programs and government retirement obligations.

It's an economic time-bomb almost ready to detonate.

They won’t be happy until they’ve driven all out of the state except the government workers and the “endangered species animals” and redwood trees.

There, finished.

I have purchased phones in both Virginia and North Carolina thru T-Mobile and paid taxes on those free phones....

And suffered the Indignity of Samsung refusing the Trade-in Phones for scratches and wear after being in an Otterbox Case - Never trust Samsung with product trade-in's.

Phone companies make a phone for under $325 for the latest Apple or Samsung phones yet we are treated worst than a Ford Dealer selling cars. RICO must apply to phone sales prices - the collusion to drive prices to above $1,000 needs some serious Anti-Trust.

Underserved? Perhaps they are underserved because they contribute nothing of value to humanity and are a general liability and waste of limited resources. Undeserving would be a more apt description

You can VPN your phone, so you might be able to get around any non-text messaging.

I think Tim Cook and Apple is missing an opportunity.

Lure these tax idea loonies government workers away, give them big salaries...tell them to think of product ideas the state could tax the production of each, make some or the final assembly in the U.S., and voila, product lull is solved. You have to know all Californians use Apple stuff, so they’ll be well versed already. The other Californians will cheer...

“Next, Commiefornia will tax the air you breathe.”

We must realize, with every further confiscation of rights and freedoms in CA, they drive out more of their citizens. This is bad for the rest of the country. The disease of liberalism spreads when Californians move and vote.

I pay about $10/month for a dumb phone, but it costs me $1 for a text message (other than Amber Alerts and such). I typically don’t read them.

Only California would create a virtual Stamp Act, counting on Californians to be so chickenschiff that they won’t stand up to it.

I need out of Cartelfornia but being taxed to death. My little neck of the woods has no more logging, pulp mills, fishing or crabbing. The ranches and farms are forced to borrow to stay afloat or sell. The environmentalists force taxation on all livable things like energy and all insurance which kills but it's cool, less people.

The dopers destroy rivers and streams allowing Cartel-Sacto to build great big marijuana fields and they're buying big box warehouses. The wars in the mountains are ongoing. Such a lovely place.

Yes, just tax everything. Hell with it. I'm voting every new tax that comes along because we are eliminating CO2 emissions one dead human at a time. Such a lovely plan.
