A new report on climate change finds the number of wild reindeer in the Arctic has dropped a startling 56% in the past two decades. The study, compiled by the U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and released at an American Geophysical Research Union meeting, found the population has dropped to roughly 2.1 million from 5 million, with some herds shrinking more than 90%.
Reindeer, referred to as caribou in some areas, are affected by higher temperatures, resulting in changes in vegetation and drought in some areas, according to scientists. Other locales are seeing increased rain, which freezes and prevents reindeer from reaching their food.
“As a result of atmosphere and ocean warming, the Arctic is no longer returning to the extensively frozen region of recent past decades,” the study reads.

I saw a story on this study in my local newspaper yesterday, and in 26 paragraphs about Arctic warming it never once mentioned the average temperatures of the region, how much they had, increased, or what the percentage of increase was. Nor was it explained why a slightly warmer climate would kill more than half of the reindeer population.
Were they eaten by polar bears?
Santa’s reindeer are a story they tell children to keep them well behaved.

somewhere around .2 degrees I’m guessing- Reindeer must be pretty fragile creatures if a less than 1 degree temp change makes them go extinct- Amazing that they survived all these 1000’s of years being so fragile apparently-

Hello.....................last ice age killed ALL MAMMALS north of Dallas, Tx.
And the global warming that followed the last ice age melted so much glacier ice, it formed the largest body of fresh water on earth, which we now know as the Great Lakes.
Note to Kerry & Gore: There was no human activity during that global warming which ended the ice age. Also note that the Sun is over Million times bigger than earth. Earth is just a speck compared to Sun. And humans are just a speck compared to earth. To think humans can out-power the Sun is infinitely stupid.

There was an interesting program (Food Network, I think) in which the host visited the Sami People in northern Finland. They herd reindeer and are responsible for them.
The host joined them for dinner, where he enjoyed, among other dishes, reindeer tartare.
Shouldn’t the libs be dancing with joy as now mother earth doesn’t need to feed so many animals nor does she have to endure all of that excrement and their farts that contribute to gloBULL warming?-)
