Tennessee GOP senator Lamar Alexander announces retirement

Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander announced Monday he will not run for re-election in 2020, saying it’s time for “someone else” to have the privilege of representing Tennessee in the Senate.

“I will not be a candidate for re-election to the United States Senate in 2020,” the 78-year-old Alexander said in a statement.

Alexander, the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, previously served as governor of Tennessee. He also worked as secretary of the Department of Education under then-President George H.W. Bush.

“The people of Tennessee have been very generous, electing me to serve more combined years as governor and senator than anyone else from our state,” he said. “I am deeply grateful, but now it is time for someone else to have that privilege.”

If they are smart they will nominate Tim Burchett for the seat and he should win. More than likely you will get a Bill Haslam/Corker/Alexander RINO trotted out. They really didn’t want Blackburn, she wasn’t a part of the country club Republican party that dominates Tennessee. I am actually surprised she won and I suspect she won in spite of Haslam and Corkers efforts to defeat her.

I predict Boyd will be the nominee of choice for the Haslam/Alexander/Corkhole country club gang.

I don’t get the feeling that Boyd really has a great reputation state-wide. But to win these days it almost doesn’t matter.

The party with the problem is the Dems. I honestly cannot think of a credible statewide Democratic name after Dean and Bredesen are surely out. Surely not Cooper or that Memphis congressman Cohen. Cooper is so boring despite his Rhodes scholarship and Cohen is very small-time machine oriented. So they’ll have to pull someone out of a non-political role maybe, but I can’t imagine it working. Seriously who? Taylor Swift?

Cohen is a Stalinist anti-Christian bigot. Even he knows he can’t win statewide. Cooper is a flake. Back when he was remotely moderate he might’ve had a shot, but this state was still Dem competitive in 1994. He knows it would be suicide, short of using it as an excuse to retire from his seat.

The top three Dem names I expect would be Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke, outgoing Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero & State Sen. Jeff Yarbro of Nashville. All 3 are very left-wing.

Yarbro is an absolute clown. He’d be a left wing outlier in Berkeley.

Joe Carr gave Lamar! A run for his money in the 2014 primary. If he works at it now,he can get better statewide name recognition.

Absolute Stalinist clowns are what the Demonrat base want. Look at Irish Boob in TX (AKA Beta O’Cuck). That’s why if any of those nutters run, they’ll be easily nominated. Remember, these folks though Pharaoh Phil was hard-right.

Carr was a stand-in for any non-RINO opponent. He’s second-tier by any stretch and seriously harmed himself after an ill-advised attempt to run against Rep. Diane Black in 2016. We’re going to need a first-tier challenger this time, such as Rep-elect. Mark Green.

We didn’t lose the House cause of retirements, I’d say maybe 5 or so incumbents that retired in seats we lost would have won had they run, and all of them would have still been in danger.

And Lamar is friggin old, there is no reason for dudes pushing 80 to run again, especially not in states like Tennesse. Rats aren’t gonna win Tennessee.

I like Pat Roberts (Kansas) but he’s over 80 and Kansas is gonna have a rat Governor, we can’t have him dying in office, so he needs to retire.

“Lamar is really not all that bad. I have his orininal governor campaign poster on my wall. I’m not really pro Lamar any more so much as too lazy to tear it down

Back in the day when he was elected governor, he showed up two or three weeks early and kicked governor Ray blanton out of the Governor’s office and took the oath early”

He was sworn in early because the state legislature threw Ray Blanton out of office for his illegal pardons.
As for being “not all that bad” The SOB got Tennessee a sales tax on groceries and wanted a huge increase in gasoline tax. He never saw a tax he was against. He was also a big proponent of the internet sales tax as senator
