The hyperbole surrounding the issue is ridiculous. The goal of BDS is to pressure Israel to stop human rights abuses endorsed/encouraged by the Israeli Government.
I realize there are people who think Israel is justified in any of their actions against Palestinians. I’m just not one of them.

But why just one country — why not all on a list of official friendlies? Why is it not worthy of Texas’ interests if someone should boycott Canada or Spain?

The required agreement doesn’t. It talks about boycotting Israel, which can be done alone or in concert. Why would boycotting Spain or Canada not come to notice?
This is surely one of the hot issues of the day.
There are some Jewish rabbis who maintain that it’s too early in history to have another Land of Israel. Its biblical extents, when realized again, will cut large chunks out of its current neighbors and require a true act of God to carry out. What to do about the modern troubled intermediate condition is a matter of sincere debate. Nobody sane should boost terrorism, ever. Any prohibition should be upon boosting terrorism. Economic choices in a legal, free market are more troubling a criteria.

I have big problems with the BDS movement, but I also have big problems with this bill, more laws and regulations is not going to solve this. The best thing we can do for the Israel and the rest of the civilized world is to pull all out funding from the UN and all the countries that surround Israel that hate Israel.
Some bill that has the potential to infringe upon American citizen’s first amendment rights and rights of free association is not going to “fix things” the same way the “great society” supposed was supposed to fix poverty.
The lady in question was a language coach, honestly she shouldn’t probably even be here in this country, but here we are, you can thank George W Bush for that crap. We shouldn’t even be having “Arabic speaking speech coaches” for lower education anyways. As a single person contractor ( which the article states) she won’t be making the type of purchases that someone like a military or government services contractor would make ( which is supposed to be the intent of this bill ).
Theoretically you could imprison her for not buying Israeli crayons for her job, even if she bought American crayons, you could fire her for not buying Israeli crayons, even if the American crayons were less expensive and of better quality. Just based off the “good intention” language of this bill. The camel’s nose was crammed under the tent via obamacare on “mandatory purchases”, pun certainly intended.
I just don’t want to some ahab arab suing the State of Texas for millions of taxpayer money because they bought some product that wasn’t Israeli produced, because they bought the same product that was made by any other country including our own country.... And because the competing contractors noticed this and mis-used the law to get them fired/jailed etc... This law sounds like some sort of ambulance chasing ACLU loving lawyer’s wet dream when it comes to how it can be manipulated.
It is just a bad law. But we will see, this case will probably be the first of many and given how screwed up the justice system is in our country you are gonna see the whole state of Texas bilked for millions if not billions by this good intentioned but poorly thought out piece of legislation.
