Shutdown talks collapse: Trump won't sign spending bill without wall money

President Donald Trump will not sign a Senate-passed spending bill, increasing the chances of a partial government shutdown, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday after meeting with the president.

The Senate unanimously approved the legislation Wednesday night to keep the government funded through Feb. 8. With Trump's support, it appeared set to breeze through the House before the midnight Friday deadline to fund seven agencies that make up about a quarter of the government.

But Trump, who seeks $5 billion to build his proposed border wall, will refuse to sign the measure without his desired border security measures, Ryan said. Trump's decision throws more chaos into the late scramble to keep the government running through Christmas and the New Year.

"We just had a very long, productive meeting with the president," Ryan told reporters after House Republicans met with the president for more than an hour. "The president informed us that he will not sign the bill that came up from the Senate last evening because of his legitimate concerns for border security

Bet Ryan was trying really hard to suppress his inner Tourette's while saying that.

LOL! Most people will be celebrating Christmas and won’t care about a government bureaucrat being on furlough.

Good choice. This is a negotiation, and that’s how negotiations work. Let’s say you’re selling a used car and the buyer is all thumbs up but when he shows up to make the payment, he frowns and says, Well, I’ve been thinking and I’m just not comfortable going ahead without this one thing being fixed”... You want to make the deal, you want to avoid all the pain that will come if you don’t - so you’re pretty likely to give him what he wants. Bargaining strength is always greatest at the decision point approaches.

There’s a really great pic of Ryan on the Conservative Treehouse website. You’ll know which one when you see it....

They may end up coming up with a deal, but once and for all Trump is not the issue here, and never has been the problem at all! The Congressional Repukes are nothing but a rubber stamp for and tag team buddies of the RATS in their Deep State cabal!

Stand firm, President Trump. Be strong and courageous. Do not let the ankle biters have any effect on you. Make America Great (and secure) Again.

With the exception of Pres. Trump’s wall for defense purposes, given that Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers continue to be fully funded, the only “shutdown” may be “federal” domestic services based on stolen state powers and revenues.

In other words, a politically correct shutdown.

An easy fix like this, rather than spend $10 billion as “foreign aid” to the Central American countries and Mexico, save $5 billion and apply the funding to the wall.

It is not a matter of money. It is a distance and direction urination contest.

And Trump has the wind at his back.

Using your car negotiation analysis, I'd like to beleive that Trump's apparant cave yesterday was all a ploy, like saying you are happy with the car and are ready to sign but when they bring the papers and are all excited you say "you know, there is one thing that concerns me still ...." and put the pen down. Now they are anxious because they are this close to getting the sale so they are desperate to figure out how to salvage it and the make some concessions to seal the deal.

Maybe he was doing that. But I think it more likely that he did in fact intend to cave and now he's taking it from both barrels from his die-hard supporters and he's saying "oh hell, that was a really bad idea. Damn the torpedoes, veto if that's what it takes but I can't sign this thing as it is"

It occurs to me that Trump is playing rope-a-dope with his enemies. I don’t believe he ever had any intention of signing the bill without the wall money, but by pretending he would and giving both the press and the Dems (yes, redundant, I know) a chance to crow and gloat, he made it all the more painful when he told them to pound sand.

He don’t fight fair, do he?

I kinda like that.

If we’re not even allowed to spend our own money on a wall that we need for national security, then I say no more foreign aid money to ANY other countries. Not one penny of foreign aid until the wall is fully funded.
