If the Saudis are ever going to take the Americans place in supporting the Kurds, now is the time.
Now, not eight months from now.
Sounds like a DEEP STATE Fake News operation to again embarrass Trump. I don’t trust a DAMN THING coming from them.
Erdogan lies....again.
In order to re-establish the Ottoman Empire, and the Caliphate based in Ankara, ALL dissident minorities must be extinguished.
Even if they might also be Muslim, as many Kurds are.
The US should recognize Kurdistan, carved out of parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, as well as parts of the old Soviet Union (Azerbaijan).
“Kurdish held Syrian town...”. Does that mean it was invaded by Kurds and occupied, or is it another media lie describing a Kurdish town as one “held”?
Let the genocide begin ... it the one thing Turks are really good at ...
Turkey trying to commit genocide again! I U.N. Geta off your butts!
So, no matter what we did, Turkey was set on invading Kurd territory.
It’s good we’re not there, we don’t need any more wars over there...we’ve got fracking.
I know the kurds are our allies and all that, but what have they ever done for us? or me?
..................
Nice of the Turks to delay until our troops are gone. Good sense too. Clearly Ergodan was planning on attacking our forces if necessary.
This article raises a few interesting possibilities.
- Maybe the Turks are only going into Manbij (and likely the rest of the area West of the Euphrates). That could leave a cohesive and more defensible Rojava East of the Euphrates, including Kobani, The Tabqa Dam controlling the Euphrates River’s water, and the richest oil fields of Syria. Also a strategic location to cut the land route between Syria and Iraq (onward to Iran).
It could be the cost of accommodation with Turkey, fulfilling Erdogan’s long announced Objective to take the territory West of the Euphrates (Operation Euphrates Shield). With Afrin now gone, there is much less strategic imperative for the Kurds to push to link up. Without those two issues, there would be much less drive to engage, and a much better chance of a stable settlement. End Game.
- Maybe France will step up to fill some of the gap left by the US East of the Euphrates. They have been deeply engaged in the fight there. Long term, the Kurds would be better off developing multiple powerful allies like France and Gulf Arabs, rather than relying solely on US support (which could be lost in one election night).
