Let’s Leave Syria
NRO ^ | Dec 21 2018 | MICHAEL BRENDAN DOUGHERTY

The intervention was questionable in the first place, and the reasons for staying are murky.

Donald Trump is looking to make a precipitate exit from Syria. His advisers, most of the leading opinion writers in the country, and all the great and the good of America’s foreign-policy elite are crying out at the blunder they anticipate it will be. The president is handing a gift to Vladimir Putin and Iran. The president is betraying our allies. Disaster.

I don’t think so.

You may remember that the U.S. Congress refused to authorize intervention in Syria in 2013, when President Obama kicked the question to them. They refused to do so because of polls showing that Americans opposed intervention overwhelmingly, roughly 70–30. And support for intervention tends to go down over time. However, U.S. forces had already been active in Syria, and in Syria’s civil war, for at least a year by that point, working with the CIA to arm and train Sunnis fighting the government. Alas, in our scramble to find “moderate rebels,” we often ended up arming Al Nusra, the franchise of al-Qaeda that is native to Syria.

the big thing that bothers me is the attacks on the kurds. iirc, they were the good guys in iraq.

Looks like another neocon rag is having to dump forme centerpiece of their policy to try to fade out of existence more slowly.

C’mon NRO. Stick to your guns and follow Weekly Standard into the dustbin.

The President is the Commander in Chief.

That is the way it is. Live with it.

Furthermore, armies need someone to guide them, to send them where needed and to tell them when to quit and come home,

make a precipitate exit from Syria.

No just getting ground forces and the ground force combat service support contractors who are US nationals out. If there is a problem the USAF, USN Aviation and cruise missiles are right handy.

We can intervene in Syria if need be via air mail from the region...we won’t abandon Israel who will intervene as necessary...

Supposedly the Saudi’s are going to step in and protect the Kurds. We’ll see how that works. Hopefully we will leave some of our equipment for the Kurds to use as well. Bottom line though is we cannot keep staying in places with an open-ended status, and no exit strategy even in the works.

Something like 2,000 people invade our southern border every night.

By which I mean they cross over, take up residence and vow to never leave.

Can you imagine how utterly outlandish it would sound in Tel Aviv if we demanded the IDF to patrol our southern border..?

The IDF is incredibly competant and THEY can handle this, they really can.

Syria is NONE of our business.

No more using false flag allegations as an excuse to bomb people who have attacked neither us nor our allies.

“Can you imagine how utterly outlandish it would sound in Tel Aviv if we demanded the IDF to patrol our southern border..?”

That’s a great idea!

We should hire them immediately!

Anyone who is against it is an anti-semite!

People in that region of the world need to protect themselves or make deals with their neighbors. It's NOT our job.

I sick of our military protecting everyone EXCEPT the American people. Build the damn wall... protect us for a change.

If the problem's the American people haven't been coughing up enough money for 'speaking fees' for former and current government officials - AND military contractors etc. then we can do a Go Fund Me for bribes... I mean fees for 'speeches'...

PROTECT OUR BORDERS FOR ONCE...

Getting out of any dubious foreign entanglement for the globalists in which Americans best and bravest are not being maimed and killed is more than fine with me. Enough of screwing around in Middle East shitholes.

Trump has an uncanny ability to gauge the true sentiment on where the American people stand. The idea that the US pulling out of Syria is somehow a disaster waiting to happen fail to recognize that Obama missed the right window of opportunity back in 13 04 14 when the so called red lines were crossed and did nothing while the CIA was arming Al Qaeda affiliates as a response to Asaad agression is a true testament to the failure of US intelligence in a part of the world that is strategically important to the US. Time to bring the boys home. Folks are sick and tired of never ending wars where the heavy lifting is bourne by the people who would least benefit from it. Like Trump said, cease the oil and reap the rewards!

The whole history is murky. Number one, we involved this nation in another sovereign nations Civil War. Our State Department under Ms. Clinton had us not knowing who the supposed enemy was.

One would think that Syria was NATO's purview, NOT the USA's. Bring our warriors and their equipment home ASAP!

We didn’t arm rebels in response to Assad aggression. Wikileaks exposed that as far back as the Bush Administration, the US Embassy was making plans with USAID to exploit Sunni separatist groups in Syria and to create an overthrow.
This was pure CIA BS.

Under Assad, a female could wear a bikini on Latakia Beachoh, and dance while drinking Syrian made wine. Drive her own car home. Wear whatever clothes she wants or doesn’t want, have a job, and drive a car. And we decided to improve on that in the Middle East by bringing in Saudi and Gulf State Sunni government.

We gotta face facts. The entire Syrian problem was created at DC and Langley.
