For probably the first time in American history, part of the government is shut down for lack of funding because of a dispute over a construction project.
President Trump, as you may have heard, promised during the 2016 presidential campaign that he would solve most of Americas immigration problems and many of its other issues by building a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico. This wall was going to be paid for by Mexico, he claimed, an assertion that was never believable. More believable: that the wall was going to be made of concrete slabs, a point he made in some detail on the trail.
Concrete plank, he said at a rally in August 2016. Precast. Precast, right? Boom. Bing. Done. Keep going.
There was a problem, though, that also crept into his rhetoric. Trump warned drug dealers, stymied by the wall, would simply throw bags of drugs over the top of it, potentially killing anyone walking on the other side. (We talked to experts; Such a throw would be a remarkable feat.) So, he said, the wall needed windows or, somehow, to be transparent.
Which brings us to Trumps tweets about the barrier as the government was grinding to a halt. No longer would the wall be concrete planks, he said, but instead artistically designed steel slats. In case that phrase was insufficiently evocative, he tweeted on Friday an image of what he was talking about.

Yeah, riiiiiiight.
Math is not a friend of liberals and is pretty much a declared enemy of journalists. (Which is one of N reasons - where N is a large number - why they are only journalists.)
As if anyone really believes these clowns in any case.
The point is that the wall must be made in shops, on wall assembly lines to be trucked in segments on flatbeds
Steel is quick and easy. Prestressed concrete takes time to make and cure and is heavy to transport.
I still maintain the best wall is lead. Cross the border at any point beyond a port of entry and get shot dead.
Compassion? No campassion is due or needed
It’s America you say? No longer, and fading fast
I don’t know about a slat wall, but a 30’ concrete wall will stop 100% of those illegal aliens who now simply walk across the border or climb over or through a small fence.
A really determined few are going to try to get over or under the wall, but it won’t be the flood that’s coming across now.
yep
Gaps are 9”? Can’t be. Many could fit through 9”.
Be careful about what is due to God.
Simple fact. Will it stop all illegals from entering the country? No. But it will be an obstacle that will channel them to areas that can be monitored and controlled. It will make enforcement easier. It is a simple tactic that is often used on the battlefield.
irrelevant
As I understand it, the Border Patrol wanted to be able to see through the wall for safety reasons, hence the slats. I believe Trump originally envisioned a solid wall.
God laughs His sides to aching over that one.

I think the President is thinking about fast construction.
Why is the Post nitpicking the composition of the wall when it doesn’t want a wall at all?
Could they electrify a steel wall?
We need a wall not a fence!
Practically speaking how difficult would it be cut through such slats with a torch or welding tools?
Mine the whole border. Add a wall. shoot any who get to the wall. Fewer will Mexico and the other ultimately die because attempts will reduce to near zero and no more will die in the desert from exposure and lack of water. Reduction of new sources of money from America and no new welfare payments and justice etc costs will pay for the wall many times over.
That right there is a fundamental problem with this whole article. A big fat assumption based on zero evidence. Anyone who has ever even dabbled in border security knows there is no "one size fits all" solution. You would never propose a continuous, homogeneous fence for an entire border of this length and varied terrain.
In sparser areas you go with lighter weight, basically marker fencing with active monitoring and quick reaction forces to intercept border crossing illegals. In rough terrain you mostly let the rough terrain be its own deterrent.
The author is intentionally floating a strawman.

Innumerate is the term you are looking for. “The Journalist class is largely innumerate,” to use it in a sentence.
