President Trump on Sunday said deputy defense secretary Patrick Shanahan will take over as acting secretary of the department on Jan. 1 to cover the accelerated departure of Jim Mattis after a string of disagreements between Trump and Mattis.
The Hill reported that Shanahan wasnt close with Mattis; however he is liked by the White House.
Hes not a policy or geopolitics guy. Hes a business guy, a source told Defense News. But hes spent the last year learning from the best. And Shanahan is known for having a good relationship with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
The Hill reported that Shanahan frequently visited Trump and Pence as project leader within the Pentagon of the proposed Space Force military service.
He believes the Pentagons focus is to increase our performance on lethality, alliances, and reform.
Too often we focus on process, or budget, or level of effort, Shanahan told Defense News. The Pentagon should focus on outcomes and outputs our performance. This focus on performance should drive us to field unmatched lethality, execute on our modernization plans and achieve this affordably.
Its all about the system and then the reinforcing mechanisms to make that change enduring. Without a system, things fall apart when the leader moves on, Shanahan continued. The system or the environment shouldnt be dependent on the leaders presence.
Its very easy in a complex environment like this to get distracted. The tactical can consume an enormous amount of time, he added. But my job is really to drive change at scale and theres a formula for doing that. And the formula really has to do with change, which must be systemic.
Read on for a look at five things you should know about Shanahan.

The easiest way to increase war fighting skills and effectiveness is to get rid of the left wing social experiments put in by Obama and maintained by Mattis. Clean house of Obama Generals who are insubordinate and dragging their feet, insist on instant obeying orders and ensure the folks at the Pentagon understand Donald Trump is the Commander in Chief, not the courts, not the Congress, not the media.
Yes!! Does this possibly mean he will end all the social experimentation in the armed forces and get them back to their primary mission?
Does he think we should put troops on the border? Thats what I want to know.
Being a business guy sounds good to me. That is, pragmatic but principled. The US press and former government figures have, for variously mostly left wing ideological reasons, been trying to sell Islamist radicals or leftists as the freedom fighters that we should support. Theyre not.
What we really need to support are those governments that guarantee support for free trade, freedom of movement for their people (many dictatorships do not let people move to more productive areas), and the basic rights of man.
But its all got to be related to what benefits the US, and one of the reasons weve lost clout is that we were just doing things that only benefitted the UN and had nothing to do with the US.
Shanahans not a business guy, hes a government defense contractor. The froth of the swamp. Did he ever serve in uniform?
No but Mattis did, and he sucked
Shanahan worked in management for Boeing. He also...
* Is a fellow of the British Royal Aeronautical Society.
* Chairperson of the Board of Regents at the University of Washington.
* Regent at the University of Washington.
* Member of the Washington Roundtable.
Boeing somehow anticipated that the Iran agreement would be canceled and signed a deal with Iran for 80 aircraft at over $16 billion.
“The pedigreed engineer, according to his bio, has two advanced degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering, and an MBA from MITs Sloan School of Management.”
“Before Shanahan was confirmed by the Senate in a 92-7 vote, the late Arizona Sen. John McCain said he wasnt overjoyed”
“Trump and Pence like him.”
“The Hill reported that Shanahan wasnt close with Mattis”.

Before Shanahan was confirmed by the Senate in a 92-7 vote, Arizona Sen. John McCain was just barely underdead.
If he sucked then why did Trump keep him in that job for two years? Perhaps Trump was OK with him and there was some sort of falling out. Not sure but I don't want to believe Trump kept someone that sucked in a cabinet position for two years.
Yeah...the board really loves everyone on the Trump team until they dont. Then theyre the worst people ever and we should have known better. Seems to me Trump should have known better-like putting Omerosa in positions of power. Not Good!
