Alzheimer’s could be triggered by medical procedures, study suggests

The seeds of Alzheimer’s disease can be transmitted through medical procedures, scientists have found, leading experts to call for the monitoring of blood transfusions from the elderly and those with a family history of dementia.

In 2015, researchers at University College London discovered that people who developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) following treatments with human growth hormone also showed signs of Alzheimer’s in their brains after death.

Interesting article, just posting to note.

Sorry the website is asking to register, which I won't do.

But it is interesting, nevertheless.

Interesting but studying the population with CJD is a very small and very skewed population. I wonder if instead of transmitting Alzheimer’s they are just unmasking a condition that is already present

I know a lady who insists her father’s Alzheimers began shortly after he had undergone general anesthesia during surgery. The family of the late actor Peter Falk has made similar claims.

Protein based like Mad Cow, and CTE? I keep hearing these same things they all have in common.

I know cleaning surgical instruments is a huge problem with Mad Cow.

Give an IQ test to a person before cardiac anesthesia and then six months after the procedure. The results would give you pause before you agree to any anesthesia that forces your brain to shut down.

Alzheimers/dementia can be brought on from just about anything...medications, anesthesia, vertigo, lack of Vitamin B, edema, etc. I took care of my mother for six years, it’s not a pleasant disease...hallucinations, total confusion, total misconception of reality, asking the same questions over and over, refusing meds, hygiene is non-existent, hiding things especially food all over the house, in some cases the patient can be violent, there’s a lot of anger, false accusations, it’s harder on the caregiver than the patient.

The problem with brain deteriorating after by pass in heart surgery was related to micro emboli from pum runs. The longer the pay ain’t was on the pump the greater the mental deterioration. The simple problem of recovery from anesthesia in the elderly is is as we age our mental plasticity decreases. We simple can’t recover as quickly. Avoid “fixed” drugs like versed and long acting narcotics etc in the elderly. I was a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for 30 years.

The etiology of the cognitive decline seen in cardiac surgery is far more complicated and pervasive than your explanation.

I’ve always thought that Reagan was never the same mentally after being shot and all the medical procedures that followed.

Probably his undiagnosed subdural hematoma had more to do with it

I had bypass surgery one year ago today- four grafts. I was 61. My mind was clear as a bell the next day and I was back at work half-time in two weeks and a day. I was amazed that I felt up to it because my Dad had the surgery twice and he was foggy both times for well over a month. My surgeon also predicted I would be off work 3 months. I was back in the gym doing very light weights by then - machines and dumbbells - no barbells. I just did nothing that winded me or hurt.

I have no technical knowledge, but I assumed that they are just much better at the anesthesia and the surgery itself now. I never felt as miserable as my Dad looked either time.

Agree entirely. Or, it could just be part of the pathological spectrum of CJD, and because the case number is small it just hasn’t been documented before.

Prion based transmission seems to be the current theory.

Good point?

Same way they ‘hid’ grannies alcohol ‘problem’ by referring to it as ‘Rheumatism medicine’<: <:

Old chestnut about the guy at the doctor being told to adjust his diet and was told to stay away from eggs and bacon etc

The patient explained that his grandfather ate 6 eggs and a pound of bacon for breakfast every day and lived to be 95.

“Well, that was before we knew about cholesterol” stated the Dr.

There's lots of cholesterol in the brain. Statins are the royal road to dementia through restriction of cholesterol and inhibition of CoQ10 production.
