By definition the term ‘traitor’ can only be applied in time of an active declared war - all other instances, the word ‘sedition’ needs to be used.

I disagree with that narrow definition.

In my view, the word, 'traitor', can be aptly applied to anyone who consciously betrays their own country through word or deed, whether during times of war or peace.
