How can one ascertain a lineage such as that to a specific individual from that far back in time?

Look at the history of Arabia. In the 7th Century, Mad Mo was f^$&#@g everything that moved among his conquests including the Jews of the Banu Qurayza tribe.
More direct descendants of Mohammed in Arabia than you can shake a scimitar at, including King Abdullah of Jordan.
