You’ve obviously never worked in a packing plant. The latest stun technique is to use CO2 to cause unconsciousness and then the throat is slit.

It has ABSOLTELY NO effect on the muscles whatsoever let alone causes “stiffening”. BTW, any type of stun has virtually no effect on meat quality or consistency. It’s pretty much an old wives tale.

What actually causes the muscles to contract and the meat to potentially “stiffen” is extreme stress of the animal. Archaic forms of stunning used years ago could potentially bring on this condition.

I was permanently scarred when a pet bull I had was slaughtered during war rationing years by a guy who first hit him in head with butt of ax.

I looked away, would not eat him, no matter how begged, or explained or wheedled, to the point my parents gave all the meat away.

There is no way to slaughter nicely.

There’s a halal butcher not too far from me.

On the occasions that I must drive by on the Harley, I crank up the stereo to drown out the screams of the goats.

Barbaric.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know CO2 was being used, at least in some places, instead of the traditional captive bolt. More humane, the better. I guess injecting an animal with propofol is out of the question though.

I worked in one in Abilene, Texas in 1975 for 2 weeks or so. They used a hand held pneumatic ram. I walked into a room in the rendering section and there hundreds (or so it seemed) of cow skulls with their eyes still in them. I was 15 or 16 (I lied about my age) and it seemed that they were just staring at me. I quit on the spot. I love steak to this day and I helped my grandfather slaughter hogs with no problem. But that got to me.
