The glory days of manufacturing were the 1970s. Back then, over 19.5 million Americans earned their paycheck from factory work. It's been a fairly steady decline ever since. Today only 12.4 million workers remain in the industry. Tiny? 12.4 million? Manufacturing is the HEART of the economy, its engine.

In my region, manufacturing industries are a major contributor to the economy in dollar terms but they only represent about 3% of the total jobs. Most of these manufacturing employers employ highly skilled people who produce high-value products like electronic components, aircraft parts, and medical instruments.
But it's only 3% of the work force ... which means strong growth in manufacturing jobs doesn't pay big political dividends here. In fact, I'll bet most people in my Congressional district couldn't even name a single company among our ten largest manufacturers.

But that 3% is the wealth creation of the economy, its the seed corn that makes it happen.

I agree with you 100%.
Go back through the thread and see what I was actually addressing when I posted my original comment. I can tell you that NOBODY running for public office in my area ever campaigns on the importance of manufacturing in the local economy -- for the reason I cited here. You'll get much further in politics here if you are seen as a champion for health care, finance, and R&D in pharmaceuticals.

Nice going, America. You have a President who is bringing back the high paying manufacturing jobs his predecessor said weren't coming back, and what did you do?
YOU VOTED TO IMPEACH HIM!

Almost 500,000 jobs that someone once said were not coming back.
