The U.S. military plans to scale back its role in Somalia and curtail airstrikes against al-Shabab insurgents after having taken out many of the group's senior operatives, two senior U.S. officials told NBC News, the latest signal the Trump administration is looking to cut the number of troops deployed around the world.
The move reflects an assessment by the administration that while the Shabab insurgency remains a threat to the Somali government and neighboring countries, it does not pose a direct danger to the U.S., current and former officials said. And it follows President Donald Trump's abrupt announcement last month that he had ordered U.S. forces out of Syria and asked for plans to be drawn up for a possible drawdown in Afghanistan.
At the start of his term, Trump initially deployed additional troops to Somalia and gave commanders more latitude to call in air power, opening the way for an increase in bombing raids against Shabab militants waging war against the Somali government.

Good, let Ethiopia take care of their neighbors.
Expect Democrats to holler about another Trump pullout from a Third World chithole.
Hell, I thought all the somalis were in Michigan these days.
Bring our boys home to their families, Mr President.
American blood is precious and must only be spent in the defence of the nation - not in pursuing Gloablist policies of empire
Fascinating how Democrats have morphed into neocons.
When can we send the refugees home?
We're going to have to change the name of the Uniparty to the Chameleon Party.
Why are we there in the first place?
The Somalis went to Minnesomalia and to Maine.
Michigan is where the Arabs have concentrated.
Maybe Trump has figured out that this is the only way our brave troops are going to get to Vote!
Folks, if we get into a global conflict, will will need contacts in foreign nations. By bringing our people home, we are severing connections that other nations will utilize in our absence.
Bases we had access to, will be bases they will have access to. Our resupply connections will be impacted negatively. Those nations who follow in behind us, will have those supply stations.
This impacts our movements around the world.
I know folks are sure as they can be that bringing our people all home to their families, is the best idea ever. I’m not convinced.
We have cut our NAVY to half it’s size. We failed to upgrade our air force when the opportunities presented.
We have cut back the size of our armed services. We have closed many bases.
We seemed to cut and run from our allies in Iraq under Obama. We are not getting ready to let the Kurds flap in the wind.
You folks may finally get exactly what you wanted.
The price may be higher than you ever imagined.
Somalia is the bottom of the barrel of sh*thole countries.
I’m liking the Trump Doctrine.
Ostensibly to stop a Shabab takeover of the Horn Of Africa.
Adventurism, is made to seem like a great idea, when your enemy is retreating. The unthinkable a couple of decades back, will soon be thinkable.
Can we also sent back somalis in US back?
America’s involvement in Somalia was another disaster given to us the Bushes and their new world order. I never saw Somalian prior to 1992. Now there are thousands of them entrenched here in San Diego. Every time I drive by a public housing project I see Somalian women in hijabs. More and more keep coming thanks to G. H. W. Bush and Catholic Charities.
That seems a reasoned thought.
As we pull out, it will be one less contact on our list for emergencies.
Let’s say we pull all our people out of 30 nations.
Then we watch as other nations sworn to destroy us, come in behind us and pick up those connections.
Does that hurt us strategically?
