Coming Out as Trans Isn’t a Teenage Fad (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | January 8, 2019 | Jennifer Finney Boylan

Posted on 01/09/2019 8:26:00 AM PST by reaganaut1

At the end of the long weekend when my daughter came out as transgender, she headed back to her car with her girlfriend. I watched them from my apartment window as they packed up. My child looked up, and waved.

Then she drove off.

I closed the window. Tears rushed to my eyes. She’s saying goodbye, I thought. I’ll never see her again.

This, of course, turned out to be malarkey.

In the months to come I’d see her lots of times, and each time she seemed happier, and more herself.

You’d think that as a transgender person myself, I’d have rolled right along with my daughter’s unveiling. You’d think that I’d have been able to show her even half the grace that my 80-year-old, Republican, evangelical mother had shown me, almost 20 years before.

In spite of everything I know about being trans, I still had lots of my own dreams tangled up in my daughter’s — formerly son’s — life. I loved that child exactly as they had been. The idea that this person was now going to be different made me think, at first, that something precious to me was being taken away.

If it was a struggle for me, I can only imagine how hard it is for other parents.

Unfortunately, what many other parents are receiving right now is not encouragement to find wisdom and understanding. What they are getting instead is a bogus new diagnosis — Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria. The inventors of this spurious term claim that R.O.G.D. is not a real trans identity but the product of social pressure.

Abigail Shrier, writing in The Wall Street Journal, describes it as “social contagion.”

The author, "Jennifer" (formerly James) Boylan, is the resident tranny at the NYT op-ed page. At least "she" got married and had two children before undergoing genital mutilation. Boylan's son is going to be mutilated before he reproduces. I don't want the children of trannies to mutilate themselves, but maybe the tranny problem will be self-limiting as the genes of people with this mental disorder die out. OTOH, homosexuals and trannies must constantly recruit the children of normal people to keep their perversions from dying out.

It's kind of funny to read an article saying transgenderism is not a social contagion, when the tranny author's child is becoming a tranny. Where did the child get the idea the genital mutilation is OK? Boylan's wife deserves some blame for not divorcing him.

Stove pipe jeans were a fad in the seventies. Mental illness had not yet caught on.

“Everywhere” is the right term. This madness seems ubiquitous because it is shoved at us by the media elite 24/7/365. No surprise the kids see it as normal and even as desirable.

Demonic possession.
God set the order in His world, the devil seeks to destroy, including destroying the order of male and female.

Only being able to come out as an opposite sex human is rather speciest.

Gender Ideology Harms Children

Updated September 2017

The American College of Pediatricians urges healthcare professionals, educators and legislators to reject all policies that condition children to accept as normal a life of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex. Facts – not ideology – determine reality.

1. Human sexuality is an objective biological binary trait: “XY” and “XX” are genetic markers of male and female, respectively – not genetic markers of a disorder. The norm for human design is to be conceived either male or female. Human sexuality is binary by design with the obvious purpose being the reproduction and flourishing of our species. This principle is self-evident. The exceedingly rare disorders of sex development (DSDs), including but not limited to testicular feminization and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, are all medically identifiable deviations from the sexual binary norm, and are rightly recognized as disorders of human design. Individuals with DSDs (also referred to as “intersex”) do not constitute a third sex.1

2. No one is born with a gender. Everyone is born with a biological sex. Gender (an awareness and sense of oneself as male or female) is a sociological and psychological concept; not an objective biological one. No one is born with an awareness of themselves as male or female; this awareness develops over time and, like all developmental processes, may be derailed by a child’s subjective perceptions, relationships, and adverse experiences from infancy forward. People who identify as “feeling like the opposite sex” or “somewhere in between” do not comprise a third sex. They remain biological men or biological women.2,3,4

3. A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-5).5 The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved.2,4,5

4. Puberty is not a disease and puberty-blocking hormones can be dangerous. Reversible or not, puberty- blocking hormones induce a state of disease – the absence of puberty – and inhibit growth and fertility in a previously biologically healthy child.6

5. According to the DSM-5, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.5

6. Pre-pubertal children diagnosed with gender dysphoria may be given puberty blockers as young as eleven, and will require cross-sex hormones in later adolescence to continue impersonating the opposite sex. These children will never be able to conceive any genetically related children even via artificial reproductive technology. In addition, cross-sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) are associated with dangerous health risks including but not limited to cardiac disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.7,8,9,10,11

7. Rates of suicide are nearly twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBTQ – affirming countries.12 What compassionate and reasonable person would condemn young children to this fate knowing that after puberty as many as 88% of girls and 98% of boys will eventually accept reality and achieve a state of mental and physical health?

8. Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse. Endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to “gender clinics” where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures they will “choose” a lifetime of carcinogenic and otherwise toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.

When I was a teen in the 1970’s we grew our hair long and wore goofy clothes.

When we outgrew the fad it could all be returned to normal with a trip to the barber and the mall.

Uh huh. Genuine trans people are almost all suffering from serious depression and the delusion that if they were different, maybe a girl this time (or vice versa) that it would all get better. Depression is being treated surgically and ... Surprise! ... it doesn't work. Denied real treatment because that would be "transphobic", they end up committing suicide in rates way, way above normal.

A good mom doesn't look at a kid who delcares himself/herself as trans and think "oh, how wonderful for her to find her true self." They should be thinking "oh god, this is a cry for help. How can I help without ending up in PC prison?"

What is the difference between a “fad” - folks being mentally and emotionally charged to irrationally do things because so many peers are doing it - and an obsession - folks that are mentally and emotionally charged to obsess over an idea, convinced of it even if it represents a lie about themselves? What’s the difference? Not much.

Whether a fad as a teenager or an obsession begun as a small child, it is wrong to mutilate your own body to satisfy a mental problem, no matter the reason. If the obsessions of drug addiction were handled the way political correctness demands identity dysphoria be handled, we’d just hand out drugs to people instead of trying to help them get rid of their addictions.

This not only undermines the author's thesis, it BELIES it.

Trannies are about 0.5% of the population. The chances of it being both natural AND passed along other than as by example is astronomical.

She(?) should cry -- trannies have a 40% suicide rate. It is essentially a death sentence.

Oh, yes it is a fad. I see it all the time. Society teaches the kids to rebel in new and rotten ways. Anything to give dad a heart attack.
I wonder, in countries where people are scratching for scraps to eat, are these ‘coming out’ kids tolerated? Or is everyone too busy staying alive?
