Hes been president for nearly two years, and up until last week, Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress. At any point during that two years, Republicans could have passed a bill to fund the border wall, and he could have gotten at least $5.6 billion.
Stop making things up. It takes 60 votes in the Senate.
Get real. The dynamic the 1st 2 years would have been the same as in the lame duck session: a Democrat filibuster and government shutdown.
Republicans didn't want to do it before the midterms either. Trump's choice was to pick a fight with Republicans in the House who would not support it, lose, and piss them off at the same time.
He could wait till the midterms, and if Republicans gained seats, he could urge them to pass it, and perhaps enough would support the idea to solve the problem with no fuss.
If Democrats gained control of a house, they weren't going to pass it, but he loses nothing beating up on them, unlike he would if they were his allies.
Trump did exactly the right thing. He didn't fight with the Republican house membership before the midterms, and now he can fight with the Democrat controlled house after the midterms.
The Senate will still not pass it, even though our side has control.
