AZ Rep. Gosar Urging President Use Army Corps Of Engineers To Build Wall

As we enter day 18 of the partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump is considering having the U.S. military build his wall if Congress will not give him the money.

Arizona Republican Congressman Paul Gosar wants the President to declare the shutdown a national emergency, which would allow him to pursue several options for the wall.

"He controls the Army Corps of Engineers," Gosar pointed out, "This is an opportunity to redirect funds from the Army Corps of Engineers to a necessity along the border."

That move, Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego predicted, will likely end up in court.

"I think that we have to check to see if he has the authority to do that," Gallego said. "I think that at some level he may have some capability, but that won't be the case once we pass the budget."

The President plans to address the nation tonight to discuss the debate over funding the wall and the government shutdown. On Thursday, he will visit the southern border in Texas.

Just heard him on C-SPAN. His idea is there is a small section in AZ needing a wall similar to the kind the Corp of Engineers built in TX. He believes it would pass the Court test.

Then move on to other areas to build walls - sounded like a military type campaign against leftist judges. Trump

How and why would the courts have any kind of jurisdiction over military matters? The military is the commander-in-chiefs mandate by the American people and the constitution, to keep the country safe.

Democrats are reaching for anything they can do to keep Trump from building the wall.

The wall, though a national security issue, is being used by the democrats as a wall in itself to keep Trump from getting another achievement under his belt in time for the 2020 election. It’s pure politics, obviously. The country’s safety matters nothing at all when it comes to stopping Trump and giving the democrat candidates a better chance in the 2020 election.

“” Gallego said. “I think that at some level he may have some capability, but that won’t be the case once we pass the budget.””

The house may pass a budget but it won’t get approval by the senate and can be vetoed by the President.

Precisely, as Commander in Chief, he can do that. And $5 Billion is a drop in the bucket in a $700 Billion military budget. Money well spent.

“How and why would the courts have any kind of jurisdiction over military matters?”

The “how” is that they merely assume the jurisdiction, as the Supreme Court did in Marbury vs. Madison in 1803.

Andrew Jackson told the Supreme Court to take a hike, but he was probably the last one to do so.

There will be a 9th district court judge who will assume the power to halt Trump, and it remains to be seen if Trump will tell him to go to hell.

Since they are already being paid, labor costs would be drastically reduced.

Could the President sell the border land to certain states and have the states build their portion of the wall? Texas...Arizona?

Almost all Corps of Engineers projects are done with contracts not in-house labor. So, unfortunately this is not the case.

I was not aware of that. What use is an engineer corps that has to hire-in to do its job?

A lot of people seem to think the Corps of Engineers are like numbers-wise a infantry corps of troops with shovels & bull dozers waiting to spring into action. My experience with them, they are another government contractor issuing agency. I would imagine there would be legislation needed to fund the contracts.

If he tells them to go to hell, I suspect they will try to impeach immediately.

“I suspect they will try to impeach immediately.”

He needs to call their bluff. They will impeach him for any reason or no reason.

May as well get it over with.

He is not the first president to defy a federal judge.

Wall at Southern Border compared to Levee and Flood Gates around New Orleans. Why not?
The Levee works pretty well.

I suggested this several weeks ago.

1. Every military unit needs training—including the Army Corps of Engineers and Navy Seabees—under difficult climates and potential hostile environment from mobs, foreigners, or even shots across the wall from Narcos. Give orders to shoot if threatened.

2,Funds are already appropriated for training for these units.

3. Military exoenditures on building funds and work such as goes on in Afghanistan to build walls around bases are often supplemented by private contractors.
