New Gorshkov-Class Frigates Will Carry More Caliber Missiles, Officials Say

The new Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, which keel-laying is being discussed by Russian authorities, the defense ministry and United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), are to be equipped with other eight cruise missiles Caliber, an informed insider told Mil.Press Today.

Project 22350 serial frigates carry 16 Caliber missiles, thus, the upgraded version will receive 24 cruise missiles of that type. The point is not a modification 22350M, but redesigning of the basic project 22350, emphasized the interviewee.

He failed to specify what version of the cruise missile is planned for installation on the ships. Early in January, media reported that the Russian defense ministry had funded the research works on the ship-based missile system Caliber-M. It will be capable to hit targets at the distances over 4,500 km. Another source in the industry took skeptically the plans to enhance arms of the frigates with the new Caliber missiles or to increase number of available ones, as the issue of other ships’ building is still outstanding. As was told to Mil.Press Today, the decision as to construction of the new Project 22350 ships depends on appropriate funding, which is lacking now. Earlier, the Russian Navy’s shipbuilding program provided for construction of eight Project 22350 frigates by 2020. Later on, this number was cut down to six, and then to four ships. For reference

Up to date, the Russian Navy has received only the lead ship in the class, Admiral Gorshkov. The second frigate, Admiral Kasatonov, will be allegedly handed over in the fall of 2019. Shipbuilders plan to complete the series by 2022.

According to Adm. Viktor Chirkov, Russian Navy’s ex-commander, it needs at least 18 Project 22350 frigates and 36 Project 20380 (20385/20386) corvettes. Also, Chirkov criticized short series, calling them harmful to the shipbuilding industry and the navy.

That is a very potent platform for just a frigate!

How many times does it take to destroy the world, either immediate or over time after the attacks? That number already exists and is in hand. What difference does it make if they have another platform to launch missiles to reach the same conclusion?

Get over it.
This is an anti-ship platform with a secondary anti-sub role.
It isn’t a strategic bombardment asset like Trident sub.

If you read my entry, I am over it. I know there isn’t a thing these new ships can produce that will make any difference. That die is already set with Russia and the US already maintaining enough nuclear weapons to take the planet out by themselves whether the first blast of life versus the next few years of a lack of ability to grow food. Take your pick, die in the blast, die of radiation poisoning in the aftermath, or starve to death in time. And like I said, writing an article like this serves no purpose at all. In the long run, it means nothing.

Looks like its designed to take out carrier groups, or naval bases—A floating one ship Pearl Harbor.

I would hope our surveillance capacity would identify this ship prior to getting into their range. But that’s what they said about Pearl. This ship is not designed to do much in the way of an active all out attack of anything if the button is pushed and a thousand ICBM’s are streaking in.

For us to hit Moscow with our devices would take about 30 minutes of flight time if fired from New York. So you can easily figure about the same time the other way. Maybe a little longer due to earth rotation.

But we probably won’t be firing from the lower forty-eight in the initial as we would be launching from subs in their immediate area so you can bet less than fifteen minutes due to their location and trajectory. And the Russians have subs off our coasts also.

If Korea joined them and fired from their soil it would take approximately 47 minutes to hit LA using the Hwasong-14 and Hwasong-15 missile systems according to a recent article I got off Business Insider. Let’s face it, they are the wild card in this game but they have limited sub launch capacity. So they will be joining the party late.
