The Germans achieved with their economy what they could not accomplish by force of arms. They essentially rule Europe.

The Bundeswehr is in woeful condition. At the end of the Cold War it was the backbone of NATOs plan to defend Euope, and over 500,000 strong. Now even the 1st Panzer is hobbled by shortages of basic parts and equipment. Since 2016 the Bundeswehr has suffered dozens of desertions to ISIS, with hundreds more soldiers under investigation for ties to radical Islam. Also a smaller issue with far-right/Nazi interest among some native (ie not “recent migrant”) German troops, especially in special operations allegedly.

Despite being continually undercut and underfunded by the political class, the Bundeswehr has been ordered to expand from 175000 up to, IIRC 220k personnel, by 2024. Difficult considering that they’re missing their current recruiting goals. Only about 1/3 of Leopard 2 tanks are operational. Similarly poor numbers with other armor and helicopters. A Tiger attack helicopter crashed in Mali last year, killing the crew, because the rotors flew off in-flight. And remember that incident a few years ago when German soldiers showed up for a NATO exercise armed with tactical black broomsticks? Bundeswehr’s party line was that those troops were unarmed because they were SUPPOSED to be unarmed. Could be true...?

Not to be kept down, those industrious Germans have had multiple Dutch brigades integrates into German command, as well as the Romanian 81st and the Czech 4th, under the Framework Nations Concept. I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure Germany’s only contribution has been a naval minesweeping unit placed under Dutch command for a couple of years. The Bundeswehr is also looking to recruit among non-German Europeans, primarily Poles and Eastern Europeans.

The EU Treaty is just Germany’s plan to dominate Europe with bureaucracy instead of tanks.

Germany doesn’t have a permanent seat

Was reading the comments an came across this:

"Sunnie Mitchell HONDA 1234

Hold your nose and go to the EU official site - click on the PESCO links to read the mission statement they published a few years ago plus any updates (the Dutch military has been subsumed into the German Army and I believe there are a few more 'member states' permitting the same. Rumour was the Danes were fully on board as well).

Important to look for the part in the mission statement where it is clearly written part of the purpose of the EU army is to...

March in and assume full control of all member state government authority when said member state has been deemed to be 'acting against EU values'."

There seems to be a lot of deception going on about the purpose of the proposed EU armed forces, but it sure looks like said forces are being set up to initially suppress any EU member state that decides that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to join.

Also, who would be in control of France's nuclear arsenal?

Any permanent member of the Security Counsel could veto the proposal. I doubt if Russia, England, or the United States would agree.
**************
Unfortunately France can agree to letting the EU determine their vote in the Security Council. simply stated all they have to do is agree to be the puppet of Brussels.

Maybe they could have a cage match for it.

Old Lady Merkel against Macrons mommy/wife.

Only on one condition: The cage is completely covered with a tarp, and I don't have to watch.

I’m just astonished that all of Europe tolerates Germany making demands, and acting like they are the final authority in Europe. We should for bid you from getting a seat. They are not a nation. If the EU get a seat in the united nations, every member nation in the EU we should lose their seat.

Imagine a future war where America and an Eastern European alliance have to fight the EU.

“speak with one voice”

I agree. In fact, all EU “states” should be stripped of their UN representatives. Why should the EU have 28 seats, vs the USA’s 1 seat?

And looking only at the Security Council, the EU has 2 of the 5 permanent seats, plus 3 of the 10 temporary seats. That’s 5 Security Council seats for the EU vs 1 for the USA. Strip them all and give them 1 Security Council seat and 1 UN Rep for all of the EU.

Gosh, I didn't know that permanent seats on the UN Security Council were the property of the seated country, to be sold or given away at their exclusive whim.

Depends on whose whim said Taiwan.

When the French tell Merkel where she can put her proposal, what will Germany do about it? Wait twelve years to equip their army? The E.U. may not be around that long.

What Eastern European alliance could that possibly be? The Baltic states wouldn’t. Poland, Slovakia, Hungary are all still members of the EU, and are largely ineffectual. Ukraine and Georgia want to be members of the EU, in addition to being largely ineffectual. Russia is no friend of ours and likely never will be. Belarus is with Russia.

Best bet is stop funding everything and let Europe pull itself apart while we watch, like prior to WW1.

“What Eastern European alliance could that possibly be?”

It would be led by the Visegrad States/Group.

I am not sure what the U.N. rules say, but I think it does not give France unilateral control over whom it can “give up” it’s seat to.

I believe that any question or change as to the seat France has would require full U.N. Security Council resolution & vote, which the U.S. can and should veto - as far as handing it off to the EU.

If anything, I would prefer to see Japan and Germany added to permanent seats on the security council & never to give the EU a seat - as I do not recognize the EU as a sovereign state.

I see no reason to imagine that...conventionally.

Randy Newman had the right idea even though he presented it as leftist mockery.

The countries of Europe that have suffered under Germany in other times want a German General commanding their troops?
