The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, a well-known critic of his country's rightwing government, died on Monday, one day after he was stabbed by a man who rushed on stage during an open-air charity event.
Thousands of people witnessed Sunday's attack on Pawel Adamowicz, 53, who was rushed to hospital where he underwent a five-hour long operation before succumbing to his injuries. He was stabbed in the heart and stomach.
The 27-year-old suspect, who was arrested, is a Gdansk resident with convictions for bank robbery and had spent time in prison. Gdansk city press officer Dariusz Wołodźko said the suspect came onstage shouting, and blamed the mayor and his party for his conviction and imprisonment.
Born and raised in Gdansk, Adamowicz had long been a fixture of public life in the city. He entered local politics in 1990 as a local councilor before serving as Gdansk's mayor, a position he held for more than 20 years.

with a flare for the dramatic gesture.
Well, at least it wasn't personal....................
Does Poland now have an ‘asylum seeker’ problem too?
I didn’t think they were allowing it. Not yet anyway.
Must be someone from the opposition party who has no coherent argument. Or somebody who should be in a locked mental hospital, before he kills again.
If one is a Pol (pol), one can’t have too much security these days.
“well-known critic of his country’s rightwing government,”
So we are to conclude what from this statement? The stabbing was a personal vendetta.
Theyre trying to politicize this as nazi hate perpetuated by a right winger ala gabby Giffords - but this looks like a loon acting indepedently for personal reasons.
Expect to see safe and sensible knife control legislation shortly.
Of course had this happened to a right wing politician this would have been a justified action.
And the good that a man does is buried with him......
This particular guy I don’t think did much good.
You can’t let a trivial thing like truth get in the way of a good narrative. I mean, after all, Jesus once asked “what is truth”?
>> what is truth?
That depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.
We’re there any Germans there?
Not every crime in Europe can be attributed to Muslims. And Poland is pretty much closed to migrants.
“The mayor of the Polish city of Gdansk, a well-known critic of his country’s rightwing government...”
Sounds like a Polish version of our filthy big city democrat mayors.
The killer is named as ‘Stefan’ for the moment.
Probably not a muzzie.
