Ahead of the meeting, the Problem Solver Democrats insisted the government must be reopened before real negotiations can begin.

This has been tried by Republicans for most my adult life. Giving Dems what they want up front has never worked for Republicans yet.

That’s the problem. Time and time again when the Republicans gave something to the Democrats, with the understanding that the Democrats would reciprocate, the Democrats just took and didn’t give anything in return. We finally have a Republican president who understands this and won’t accept being taken advantage of.

Exactly. Giving the Democrats what they want means there will be no more negotiations.

They usually play the Republicans for stupid and it usually works. Not this time.
