Do you side with your own father or the political winds which your party has trimmed its sails to? Your political party of course, if you’re a Democrat.

One of my favorite books when I was a kid in school was Profiles in Courage. One of the stories that stands out is that of the senator from Kansas who refused to vote for Andrew Johnson's removal, even though the folks back home wanted his scalp. The decision ruined the senator's career. As I recall, he couldn't even go back to Kansas. I guess that book doesn't get read much nowadays.

Her father, who ran for Congress as a Republican, is now a Democrat in the state legislature, and he's also had to downplay his own past, so he may not object too much to her doing the same.

It's like that in one party states.
