I think Mueller is playing cya ahead of a leak investigation. IMO. When the canary quits singing you’re dead. Coal miners have known that for years.

Dan Bongino thinks it migh’ve been a “canary trap” to catch leakers. I THINK he meant that the two anonymous sources, and ONLY those two people, were fed the lie. Then they —Mueller, etc. — waited to see if it would be leaked to the news. It was. Now they know who leaks.

I would characterize this differently. My guess is that THIS happened:

1. BuzzardFeed is standing by the story because their sources are standing by the story.

2. The sources are part of Mueller's team.

3. There is going to be no leak investigation because there was no leak. The sources flat-out LIED to BuzzardFeed. There's no leak if the information is fake.
