On Jan. 1, the new minimum wage, set at $15 an hour, went into effect in New York City, and most companies employing more than 10 people have to pay it. The increase, considered a crucial step in the fight against poverty, is the result of a hard-fought grass-roots organizing effort begun seven years ago and championed as a great victory by liberal politicians, even those who were initially not liberal enough to embrace it. But how much will the new standard do to alleviate some of the most punishing aspects of the citys affordability crisis?
Last year, San Francisco and Seattle enacted a $15 minimum wage. Though both cities are also fantastically expensive, it is too soon to to draw any comparison to New York, which presents its own challenges. (What we do know from a study examining the experiment in Seattle is that as wages increased on the path to $15 an hour, experienced workers benefited most from higher pay at the expense of reduced opportunities for workers with less experience.)

Does that mean that those above $15 also get an equal raise? It is only fair.
so many small and medium businesses went out
because of this (most recent “Durgin Park”),
that the lunatic left wants MORE ... of both.
If I can do it, so can anybody else.
Minimum wage should be $1,950.00 an hour.
I thought this was a joke when I first saw it. Unbelievable that people can be this stupid. I read many of the comments after the article, and about half thought this was a great idea. Just about every person who was in favor of this idea used the word “force” at least once in his comment. That tells you all you need to know about liberalism/socialism/communism.
My guess is only illegals make less than $15/hr in the Big Apple. So let NYC do it’s NYC thing.
They are simoly clueless. They note that costs are going uo but do not seem to know why (or perhaps they think it is just greedy landlords, etc). Their solution to higher costs is to increase costs.
I managed a multi-million dollar business during the, ‘0bama Reign of Error.’
Between re-classifying people as ‘full-time; at 32 hours, forcing us to stop FLEX plans and deny insurance to some workers and all the other HELL 0bamacare rained down upon our heads, I still can’t believe we made it through those EIGHT LONG YEARS!
I’ve been retired since 2016 and I’m STILL p*ssed about it!
The day where you make more money flipping burgers than repairing transmissions....will be the day that world has flipped.
Just at $20 an hour....a Double-Whopper meal at BK will likely be around $17. It’ll be beyond most folks to stop have a burger dinner.
“The $15 Minimum Wage Is Here. Why We Need $33 an Hour.”
This is seriously not an Onion headline.
Left unsaid here, wages are subject to supply and demand, just like anything else.
How much you wanna bet “open borders” isn’t part of her argument? Hint: 20 million illegals competing for jobs and resources drives wages down. Way, way down. The minimum wage would probably be $20 - $25 an hour for unskilled labor without millions of foreign nationals here. And no legislation or “advocacy” required.
Further, paying people not to work has the effect of.. people not working! It’s crazy, I know, but it’s true. Maybe they could do a “study” on that too. Grocery prices are probably 15 to 25 per cent higher due to government payments. So the poor taxpayer pays for it all, their reward being ever smaller containers, a “pound” of coffee that is 12.367 ounces, bags of chips marked “Family Size” that would only feed a family of chipmunks. F these people.
No, this is not a quote!
I read some comments too. A smattering of business owners pointing out they are going to go out of business. The rest are incredibly bitter libs who think that society is a pyramid and the pyramid needs to be smashed.
Yes, the root of their phony compassion is covetousness. None of them are offering to pay for anything themselves.
That's ridiculous. A guy in Nebraska may make $33/hr but in NYC that is poverty.
Wow this wasn’t satire, SMH.
Dear retirees and pensioners,
We hate you.
Yours Truly, NYNY
