Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) wrote in a USA Today op-ed Sunday that some people affiliated with the GOP have recently "made racist comments that give legitimacy to hateful ideologies."
"As a Republican, I believe its unfortunate that a perception still exists in the minds of some Americans that the GOP condones racism. Our party was built upon the beliefs of President Abraham Lincoln, who took the significant step to put us on the long path for equality," Hurd wrote in the op-ed published on the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"Sadly, some people affiliated with our party have made racist comments that give legitimacy to hateful ideologies," Hurd added.
The op-ed comes after Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) earlier this month questioned why the terms white supremacist and white nationalist were offensive.
King, who has a history of making racist remarks, has faced pushback from a number of GOP lawmakers, some of whom have called on him to resign.
In his op-ed Sunday, Hurd invoked Martin Luther King Jr., saying he "reminded us that, 'in the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.'
"Otherwise, our deeply held belief in giving everyone a chance at the American dream will be drowned out by the loud and unconscionable beliefs of a few. When people start believing that the average Republican holds these beliefs, then every Republican suffers by association," Hurd added.
Does he believe this will make him a hero?
Does he believe this will insulate him from attacks?
This guy just gave the left the confirmation they were looking for.
Nobody's looking for confirmation any more.
People believe what they believe, and they aren't going to consider anything somebody on the other side says as better evidence than what they say themselves.
Remove him from all committees. We now know its an option.
Somebody needs to get a big drum and spend all day drumming it 6 inches from his face. I hear that’s acceptable behavior these days.
They misspelled Mr. Turd’s name.
hurd is a coward, but king needs a full time mouth monitor. DJT is winning the shutdown PR battle, but some of the oxygen in the news cycle is being consumed because the iowa mouth tornado has no filter.
There’s a reason Steve King was dissuaded from running for the Iowa US Senate seat eventually won by Joni Ernst.
Will Hurd is a Bush League Republican, he sold out to the Cheap Labor Express long ago.
The Republicans had better start living by the motto
“United we stand, divided we fall”
They are digging their own grave, Trump can not carry them all.
The House GOP is still run by Cheap Labor Express stooges because we keep electing Bush League Republicans.
heavens. didn’t know that. wouldn’t that have been a disaster,,
Steve King is already under the bus. It has rolled over him.
Does he believe this will insulate him from attacks?
No, being Black will probably do that.
Let's say he was a Democrat objecting to Tlaib's comment.
That would be okay. So is this.
All the more so, since tomorrow it will be yesterday's news. So long as King doesn't put his foot in his mouth again.
And a news flash: Some Democrats have made racist comments.
“Our party was built upon the beliefs of President Abraham Lincoln, who took the significant step to put us on the long path for equality”
We should not invoke Abraham Lincoln when the need arises to distance the GOP from white supremacy.
Not in this day of electric computers.
Yet you have Democrats..openly praising the “Women’s March” who PUBLICLY yesterday called for the BOYCOTT of Israel and the FULL support of Louis Farrakhan..
And for what? Democrats aren't going to vote for them and their base will walk away from a back-stabbing coward.
Any repub that allows the domestic enemy to define anything for him or follows any definition of anything established by the domestic enemy identifies himself as subservient to the domestic enemy.
Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) wrote in a USA Today op-ed Sunday that...

USA Today editors obviously sent out the e-mail looking for GOP Reps. that would deprecate themselves and the party. Did the newspaper find a Dem. who would do the same?
As, presumably, have some people affiliated with the Democratic Party, the Knights of Columbus, the Green Party, the Sierra Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO, the Salvation Army, the Genovese Crime Family, and any other voluntary association you might care to name.
Everyone "makes racist comments", and if they don't, they think racist thoughts, and if they don't, they waste enormous amounts of energy they could be doing something constructive SUPPRESSING racist comments or thoughts.
Again, following my prior comment, so what?
There are people who want Israel boycotted and there are people who are followers of Louis Farrakhan.
So what? That's their business.
Do you want to live in a country where authorities or pressure groups are constantly organizing campaigns or struggle sessions to attack people for voicing their opinions?
I sure don't.
