How come you can’t just log on to IRS.gov and file? Hm? Shouldn’t cost a damn thing.

For sure - they have their own software to do it with - I was a tax rep for a while and used it to file for others on the Base....

If you’re a single minimum wage worker with no deductions then you basically can.

If your return is any more complex than that then it likely involves a lot of obscure rules and multiple judgement calls. It’s VERY easy to get yourself in trouble unless you know what you’re doing, that’s why I pay a good CPA too much money to do mine and keep me out of pitfalls.

The tax code is very complex and as a middle income taxpayer with a small farm my return usually runs around 50 pages. There’s ABSOLUTELY no way I’d trust the IRS to do my tax return and not grossly tax me more than I am liable.

It might work for 20% of the population, but for the rest it would take a top to bottom overhaul of the tax code to make it viable.

Just filed mine online via FreetaxUSA for free.....Second year in a row. They’ll file your state for a $12.50 fee too........
