On Jan. 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy will announce the five short documentary films up for the Oscar. Among the shortlisted films is the documentary Women of the Gulag by Russian-American director, Marianna Yarovskaya. It is the first time in the 91 years of the Oscars history that a woman director from Russia is so close to getting such prestigious award.
Yarovskaya´s documentary film centers on the memories of six remarkable women survivors of the Gulag. Now in their eighties and nineties, they were sentenced to Soviet forced labor camps during the Stalin era.
But despite the honor, the film has received scant attention in Russia. Only a few Russian media outlets wrote about it, and no Russian official has commented on it publicly.
Russian Gulag deniers yes, there is such a group have been active.
A Gulag-denier writes that the much-authenticated order 00447 that initiated the Great Terror is a fabrication of Russian human-rights organizations.
Many of the listeners comments on radio Echo Moskvy´s coverage condemned the film, claiming that it was paid for by Putins opponent, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, that it is part of a Jewish plot and that the Jews created the Gulag in the first place. Others commented that the Russian dissidents who support the film have been discredited, and that Yarovskaya should have made a film about female prisoners incarcerated in the burning deserts of Arizona.
Yarovskaya´s documentary is based on many sources, especially Alexander Solzhenitsyns books, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago.
We want that as many people as possible see our documentary. Thats why I hope that one day Russia´s first channel [state TV] will show the documentary, Yarovskaya said. But Putin probably won't like it.

Vera Hecker was arrested for playing German hymns.
Yarovskaya speaks with Elena Posnik, who hauled uranium ore in the camps.
They also weren’t happy with “The Death of Stalin”, which is a great film, I highly recommend it.
This looks very interesting.
Great movie. We’ve watched it three times. Some great acting.
I want to see this! I knew Helena Iswolskaya, daughter of the Czars last minister to Paris. She was born in 1897 so she was already older when I met her in the late 60s. A brilliant woman, and one lucky enough to have been living outside of Russia at the time of the Soviet takeover. Look her up on wiki.
Russia has a tradition of uncompromising, intellectual women, and I hope I get to see this film. Thanks for posting about it.
Maybe because she’s a Communist and they’ve had quite enough of that?

Any red-blooded American can understand wanting nothing to do with her.
One thing I mentioned is the Brits and Russians are a sort of arch-enemies since 17th century but their take on each others’ culture is out of this world. On both sides.
Cinema is one great example. Both make a lot of movies based on either side’s classics and it is often very good. All without unnecessary appropriation. No Russian in a British movie speaks with fake accent or stops looking British but it still captures the essence just great. The same is true for Russian British-themed movies.
John Batchelor frequently replays his interview on his late evening show with the author of a book on Women From the Gulag. Might be topic on tonight. WLS am 890 10pm CST
She’s no Spielberg and never will be.
Very glad you mentioned this film.
Another must see Soviet expose:
The Soviet Story
2008 film
The Soviet Story is a 2008 documentary film about Soviet Communism and SovietGerman collaboration before 1941.
Written and directed nore and sponsored by the UEN Group in the EU.
And funny as hell!
There were some good Russian-made films in the early 90s that exposed how evil the Bolsheviks were, one that comes to mind is The Chekist.
I don't care for his politics, but anything that Steve Buscemi is in, is pretty much guaranteed to be good.

Have the decency not to toss around the word "Communist" lightly like that in a thread about the crimes of real Communists.
It is people who want to defend real Communists and minimize their crimes who are attacking or ignoring the film.
Have the decency to recognize the Communists are back and have nearly completed their takeover of the West.
They may call themselves “Socialist” instead but there’s not a hair’s worth of difference.
And the Chinese Communists never went anywhere and are a rising power - one that actively interferes in our domestic political system.
And ironically enough, our Communists today seem to have a fixation with setting the US and Russia at odds. This person with their constant propaganda items is working in sympathy with them.
Just as an FYI, Putin’s an unrepentant communist, even trying to save Stalin’s image, and he has yet to, among other things, have the Karl Marx statue at Teatralyana Square torn down, close down Lenin’s tomb, outlaw the Communist party, even burn his KGB credentials. Yes, China’s a threat, and we are going to deal with them soon enough, but don’t act like Communism’s gone from Russia. I seek to wipe out ALL forms of Communism, especially after what they did to us Christians. Our biggest mistake was ensuring Russia didn’t undergo something like the Nuremberg trials.
Just as an FYI, Lisa Ling and National Geographic are just about as left-wing as her, yet I doubt even you would reject their documentary Inside North Korea (which exposes the true horrors of the North Korean system) just because of her politics. And it’s pretty rich you’d denounce her as not being Spielberg, since he’s one of those leftists who sang praises for Cuba and tried to push homosexuality, and I wouldn’t even be surprised if Spielberg also tries to push the pro-Globalist agenda.
And as an FYI, just because I and CondeleezaProtege denounce Putin doesn’t mean we’re pro-Globalist or pro-Soros. Actually, if I must be honest, I want BOTH concepts dead alongside Communism, seeing them as the exact same ugly thing.
The thing is, there was no litany of anti-Russian propaganda here in the past.
It just showed up AFTER Hillary and the Clintons started blaming Russia for their loss.
So you can understand why I am suspicious as hell of someone who, after the Clinton Russia hoax was already in full swing, started regularly, uncritically and ironically posting anti-Russian pieces from globalist sources aligned with the Clintons/Soros etc.
WesternFreePress is conservative, last I checked, and even THAT exposes Putin being a Communist. Or at least, it did, until the article stopped being displayed. Here’s where it was at: https://westernfreepress.com/is-vladimir-putin-a-communist/
Also, RenewAmerica is obviously not globalist, and that makes clear Putin is communist: http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/westerman/140702
And just as an FYI, I voted for Trump (and Trump wasn’t even my first choice for that election: Ben Carson was) and don’t even remotely buy the idea that Putin interfered in the elections on Trump’s behalf. Assuming he did do ANY interference in the election, he would have been more likely to do it on Clinton’s behalf since he hates America and wants Russia restored, something he cannot accomplish if Trump’s MAGA got elected.
