News Executive: Democrats’ Arrogant Intransigence Could Bite Them If This Shutdown Drags On
Townhall.com ^ | January 21, 2019 | Matt Vespa

So, could this shutdown end up hurting Democrats again? Both sides are not budging. The partisan divide on immigration is the equivalent of the width of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans combined. President Trump is trying to make good on his promise to secure the border, a key campaign promise. The Democrats, wanting to take their new House majority for a spin, are not playing ball. They were elected to block and fight this administration. They’re not giving one-cent. President Trump recently offered a deal to break the logjam. A three-year extension to DACA recipients, plus more protections to those with Temporary Protected Status in exchange for part of his border wall projected to cost around $5.7 billion. Democrats have rejected the deal outright. They have no counteroffer. And if Democrats come up with one, it’ll be straight trash. The Democratic Party is more concerned with scoring points than re-opening the government. They say they want to negotiate, but have nothing to offer.

Trump has to deliver on something regarding the wall, he based his 2016 campaign on border security. Democrats can’t cave on a key Trump initiative at the outset of their new House majority. And Trump can’t cave to House Democrats. There is no end in sight, but can Democrats get a face full of buckshot in this fight? Yes, Trump and the GOP are being blamed more…because what else is new. But voters agree that there is a border crisis, and support for the wall has risen. With the government shutdown, you have Speaker Pelosi screwing around with the State of the Union, virtually disinviting Trump over nonsensical security concerns and her party absconded to Puerto Rico during the shutdown. So, spare me the ‘those poor government workers’ lectures from the Left; they don’t care about them. RealClearPolitics’ Tom Bevan said last week that Democratic intransigence could bite them in the end. And while this deal offered by Trump isn’t the best, and certainly not warmly received by his camp, it’s at least something to go on for future negotiations.

Then again, both sides see their side winning in the polls. Democrats see the blame portion, while the GOP and Trump see how voters back border security. As this drags on, we’ll see who gets torched:

People are in favor of border security. People also don't want the government shutdown. Polling right now shows that people are holding Trump responsible but I think Democrats are starting to run the risk of intransigence. Not even showing up to bargain at all and even arrogance, being on junkets in Puerto Rico while the government is shut down. That's not a good look for Democrats and that may end up hurting them in the long run if this continues to go on. Trump still has a national emergency in his back pocket, he may use it if it gets to the point where he has no other options because he just can't capitulate.

Trump.45’s recent tweet about the streets of San Franfreako inspired this new Pelosi nickname:

Her Excremency

President Trump will win because it all boils down to the President wanting a wall to protect Americans, and the Democrats wanting to benefit non-Americans. He can tweet all day about crimes committed by illegals, benefits received by illegals which have been cut off for Americans in the shutdown, how the President is protecting the people who have been hired in the boom from unfair labor competition.

Ryan was all but waging the same war on Trump behind the scenes. He was not at all a good faith actor.

They needed 60 votes in the Senate, and wouldn’t have gotten that even if flocks of flying pigs darkened the sky at noon.

...lots of shrimp, steak and lobster sold at the end of this month...
________________
They can shop the sales. My local grocer had whole pork butts for $1/lb and small turkeys for $0.69/lb this week. Lots of canned goods deals, too.

Forego the manicures and hair styling for a couple of months, cook from scratch, they can eat better longer for less.

Good enough for us. I travel to shop cheaper once a month, stock the freezer, utilize almost every leftover/scrap and keep a pantry. Never buy processed food. Buy whole chickens and make soup out of carcasses and drippings. Make our own candy, too. Etc. Second nature to most people and YT is full of videos on eating well for very little, as well as living on a small income. Watch the sales and you can even find steaks, whole muscle in the bag for half the butchered price.

Should not be a problem, but probably will be.

“Both sides are not budging”

Not true. The Trump administration has a new offer out there that helps DACA people, and they switched from concrete to steel.

“They say they want to negotiate, but have nothing to offer. “

This is inaccurate. They have something to offer - they can offer funding for the wall.

They CHOOSE to offer nothing.

“But seriously president Trump has the upper hand because he has an avenue to accomplish his pledge to secure the border in the form of a wall - via declaring a state of emergency.”

I think this is the eventual plan. He realizes that he can’t - well, shouldn’t - just declare one though. Instead, he’s making move after move trying to negotiate with the Dems knowing full well that they will not budge.

Once he’s made a few attempts he can get back on TV saying something like

“I’ve tried, I’ve offered compromise after compromise including things Democrats have wanted for years. They haven’t moved from their initial position. I’d much prefer to work with them but they leave me no choice but to do it alone.”

Like that will help. If they were budget minded they wouldn’t be on welfare. If they were paid early they’ll spend early, it’s already gone.

Come 2020, Trump supporters will still be Trump supporters. We know the Rats have refused to negotiate. We know that the Rats are the reason the wall is not being built. Trump will not be blamed for this by his supporters.

Yet, I hope he will use the Border Crisis as a reason to have the military build the wall. We can’t afford to wait til 2021 & the hope the House will flip again.

BUILD THE WALL NOW! Keep the shutdown going & lay off the non-essential workers, for good.

They didn’t need 60 votes for Obamacare, they could have passed it under reconciliation. That is what it is there for.

The writer is being a bit goofy. I suppose he technically is a “news executive”, but I don’t even know who “RealClearPolitics’ Tom Bevan” is.

Pelosi would have more credibility if she tore down the wall surrounding her mansion.

The same reason they caved on ending Obamacare after they all campaigned on it. They're liars and cowards.

What we have here is a genuine Mexican standoff.

Trump should tell them the longer it drags out the more money he will ask for. For every week they keep it shutdown the price goes up. Say...1 billion a week.

Love to see how that plays out with these idiots.

Can you imagine this all out war going on with Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House?

You can't be serious. It was Ryan's fault the wall wasn't funded over the last 2 years!!!
