Brussels, Dublin and London have all stated they do no want a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland after Brexit.
But the EU has given apparent confirmation they would enforce such a scenario should the UK leave the bloc without a withdrawal agreement, known as a no-deal outcome.
The comments prompted Ireland's deputy prime minister Simon Coveney, also his country's foreign minister, to repeat Dublin's position that it is not planning for a hard border, even with the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.
"The Irish government will not support the re-emergence of border security on this island," he said.
Mr Varadkar said, if there was a no-deal Brexit, the UK and Ireland would have to "negotiate an agreement on customs and regulations that meant full alignment so there would be no hard border".

This is pretty ironic. Will the Irish Republic bow to their foreign masters, or will there be an Easter Rising to return to the folds of the "butcher's apron" (Union Jack)?
This is a exciting opportunity for the Irish government.
They get a chance to tell Brussels to go to hell.

And just how, pray tell, would they do that?
Build the Wall.
That's where their markets are. That's where millions of their citizens live.
The value to Ireland of the EU was to deliver union with Great Britain without having to be united with Great Britain.
Now, if GB leaves the EU (which I do not believe for a minute will be allowed), 95% of the value of the EU to Ireland will be gone.
Since both countries (the UK and Ireland) are controlled by atheists, and since most of the population of both islands is effectively anti-Christian, there really is no reason for them not to unite.
Yeah, Ireland is not what it was. Don’t expect a lot of machismo from that PM fellow and the pathetically liberal legislature (it’s too bad there are no meaningful conservative parties in Ireland - imagine how frustrating it must be for the one third of the country that voted against abortion, for example, to not have any representation in their government.)
Anyway, if neither the Republic or the UK sets up a hard border, what is Brussels going to do, send in its own clowns? What a farce.
The UK intends for Ireland to remain in the Common Travel Area after Brexit, so Irish people can continue to live and work in the UK with no issues. (As I understand it.)
There’s a very easy way to counter this.
The UK should declare Northern Ireland a free trade zone. No corporate taxes for 7 years for companies based there. No duties, quotas or permits required on goods imported into Northern Ireland.
No border with the South? Fine. Watch these goods go flooding into the Irish Republic. Maybe even into continent.
EU will have to play the bad guy if they want to take that away from the Irish.

Britain can’t leave the EU because the Irish don’t want customs at the border with Ulster? LOL.

The idiotic concept of the EU somehow creating a hard border between Northern Ireland and any other part of the UK is ludicrous. The EU is going to invade, build a wall and then man it???

The people living there VOTED to stay part of the UK.
Which is why the communist terror group IRA continues to attack them. After all a community freely choosing is anathema to them.

The irish and northern irish cannot have their cake and eat it too, i would imagine. At some point they will need to determine if an open border is more important than staying one one side or another of of the eu fence, or vice versa.
As for who enforces a border, perhaps ot will be the uk since otherwise they will have an undicumented immigrant aka foreign terrorist issue from ireland sooner or later with an open border. Either that or the brexit pain for the gain in sovereignty and security ultimately will be in vain.
