Doubt the Brooks column is sincere in any way. NYT badly needs to blunt the scythe of libel litigation, child abuse, and civil rights charges which threaten to put the Old Grey Lady in her well-earned grave as Hulk Hogan did to GAWKER.
The NYT knows that they are legally exposed and highly likely of loosing any court case.
This is the ONLY reason they are backing off.
