Why do you think we will never have term limits? The only reason the president has term limits is because it rankled the Republicans when FDR was elected for his 4th term. Republicans were then in charge of Congress. In 1947, they pushed through the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, limiting future presidents to two four-year terms. The ratification of the amendment came on this date in 1951, when Minnesota became the 36th state to ratify it.

What you mat also forget is that the GOPe was so incensed that the base would select Donald J. Trump they talked about denying Trump even if the base selected him. How they resisted that one is beyond me, because that is the kind of move the “stupid” party (a.k.a. The Republican) usually makes. Perhaps it was the hue & cry from the base that if they did pull such a stunt, the Republican Party would never win another race.
