Medical examiners in New York have ruled that the mysterious deaths of two sisters found dead and duct taped together on the banks of the Hudson River was a double suicide. The cause of death was drowning.
The bodies of Rotana Ferea, 23 and Tala Farea, 16 were discovered on October, 24 2018 near the George Washington Bridge. They were quickly identified as Saudi citizens who had gone missing from a shelter-like facility, possibly for abused women, in Fairfax, Virginia in August.
"Today, my office determined that the death of the Farea sisters was the result of suicide, in which the young women bound themselves together before descending into the Hudson River," Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said in a statement on Tuesday.
The sisters' bodies were found both wearing black leggings and fur-trimmed jackets. They were bound together loosely with duct tape at the waist and ankles. A witness reported seeing the Fareas earlier that day praying loudly and holding their heads in their hands near the area where it's believed they then walked into the water, intentionally drowning themselves.
The sisters had allegedly applied for asylum in the United States in the months before their death and been denied. At a press conference, NYPD Detective Dermot F. Shea reported that while that Fairfax, VA facility the women had said they would rather inflict harm upon themselves than return to Saudi Arabia. They also alleged abuse by their mother, father, and brother.
After leaving Fairfax in August, the Fareas made their way to New York City where they stayed in high end hotels and ordered takeout meals on a credit card in Rotana's name. Around October, shortly before they died by suicide, police believe the "money started to run out" as they reached the limit on the card.
The Farea sisters' death -- along with the story of Rahaf Mohammed, an 18-year-old Saudi citizen who fled her family and found asylum in Canada -- has drawn negative attention to Saudi Arabian guardianship laws. These restrictions include the requirement that women have the permission of a male to travel. Advocates say this can trap women in abusive situations.
Though I grieve for their souls, I completely understand their earthly pain.
It was probably tight when they went in the water. Being taped together would insure that they were weighed down, that they would keep each other from backing out, and they would be found together.

This is very sad. These desperate women couldn’t stay, but any idiot who can crawl across the Mexican border just stays. And is never again asked for his ID. Those girls could have stayed, too, if they had someone to put them up at their home. They didn’t understand that if you don’t seek legal status, you don’t need it.
They definitely committed suicide. They thought their choice was get refugee status or be deported. They REALLY didn’t want to go back to their abusive family. They expressed that they would rather die than go back.
They had no idea that millions just stay and don’t apply for anything. They’d be alive today if they knew this was a sanctuary country where illegals just hang out and nothing ever happens to them, even if they commit violent crimes.
I’m sad for these girls.
Maybe one ankle to the other sister’s ankle, like in a 3-legged race.
Why not apply to Canada for asylum if denied it here?
Probably came up with that approach after reading “Suicide for Dummies - a Self-Help Manual” by Vince Foster.
If the death of that Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, had occurred in NY or California, in the exact same way as he ‘died’, it would have been ruled a suicide too. The protected religion can’t be allowed to appear to be doing any wrong or evil.
Those girls committed ‘suicide’ because, if the real truth were revealed, there would be no end to the condemnations and riots and calls to keep them out of the country, or at a minimum, demands to hang the perpetrators.
So... How close is the place they were found to Chappaqua?
We’re their arms taped together? No one would commit suicide like this. If they were going to jump off a bridge, they would simply hold hands and jump. But then that wouldn’t be easy either. One usually will kill the other and then oneself.

Looks like lots of folks jumping to conclusions w/o reading the story - “loosely taped together at waist and ankles” might be a clue....
